Nibblewhisker Greytail

Taster

Royal Taster of Lygos

Race: Tabaxi (gray-furred, long-haired)
Appearance: Short and round-bellied, with shaggy silver fur that never quite lies flat. His bright green eyes are often half-lidded with contentment. He wears court livery stained with crumbs and wine blotches, and his whiskers are perpetually twitching as he sniffs the air.

Role in Court:
Nibblewhisker is the Royal Taster, responsible for ensuring no poison reaches King Arius’ lips. Despite being a Tabaxi, Nibblewhisker is famously clumsy: knocking goblets from tables, tripping over rugs, even once falling into a soup tureen. Yet his extraordinary senses — especially smell — make him uncannily adept at detecting poison, both mundane and magical.

Methods:

·        He takes small (and sometimes not-so-small) bites from every dish, swirling it in his mouth with exaggerated seriousness before announcing its safety.

·        Uses his keen nose to detect subtle herbs, metals, or alchemical traces.

·        Regularly casts Detect Magic to catch enchanted toxins or cursed meals.

·        Boasts that his “tummy of iron” has survived more poisonings than anyone else in the kingdom.

Personality:

·        Cheery & Boisterous – Loves food, laughter, and gossip, often with his mouth full.

·        Prideful in His Role – Though mocked for clumsiness, he takes fierce pride in keeping the king safe.

·        Suspicion Magnet – Nobles accuse him of “taking more than necessary,” but his good humor and loyalty keep him in favor.

·        Affectionately Indulgent – The king tolerates Nibblewhisker's antics because of his sunny outlook and dependable service.

Sample Quotes:

·        “Mmm, hints of saffron, cinnamon… and a touch of rat poison. Best not serve this one, eh?”

·        “If I fall down frothing at the mouth, don’t panic — it’s all part of the job!”

·        “A king must never go hungry, so I take extra care with seconds… and thirds.”

Plot Hooks:

·        A rival noble bribes Nibblewhisker to overlook a poisoned dish. Will his loyalty or his appetite win out?

·        Nibblewhisker confides he smells something strange in the palace kitchens, but no one believes him.

·        During a feast, Nibblewhisker collapses — is it poison, or a bluff to catch an assassin?

·        If the PCs befriend him, Nibblewhisker can be a font of palace gossip — he hears more over dinner than any spymaster.

·        Heightened Senses. Nibblewhisker has advantage on Wisdom (Perception) checks that rely on smell or taste.

·        Detect Magic (At Will). Nibblewhisker can cast Detect Magic without material components, usually sniffing and muttering as he does.

·        Clumsy. When Nibblewhisker rolls a natural 1 on an attack, check, or save, he also drops or spills something nearby (often food, drink, or a prop).

Actions

·        Silver Tasting Spoon (Dagger). Melee Weapon Attack: +1 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 1 (1d4–1) piercing damage.

·        Distracting Chatter (Recharge 5–6). Nibblewhisker launches into a stream of cheerful rambling. Each creature of his choice within 10 feet that can hear him must succeed on a DC 12 Wisdom saving throw or have disadvantage on its next attack roll before the start of Nibblewhisker's next turn.

Role in Play

·        Court Intrigue: Nibblewhisker rolls Perception (advantage) to sniff out poison or tampering in food/drink.

·        Assassination Scenes: He might be the first victim if poison is slipped into a feast.

·        Comic Relief: His clumsiness turns tense scenes into memorable moments.

·        Plot Ally: As the king’s loyal protector (in his own way), he can tip off the party about palace plots.
