Barkley

Dog

Description:
Barkley is a large, aging chocolate Labrador with a thick, shaggy coat and soulful amber eyes. His muzzle is dusted with gray, and his big, floppy ears often twitch at the slightest sound. Despite his years, he carries himself with the unshakable confidence of a dog who knows he’s in charge—at least in the small corner of
Lygos he patrols. His tongue is perpetually lolling out in a dopey grin, and his enthusiastic tail thwacks against everything in its path like a drum of joy.

Personality:
Barkley is endlessly friendly, blissfully unaware of his own size and strength. He loves nothing more than bounding up to people—especially
Helene Youngantler—to greet them with muddy paws and sloppy face licks, much to Helene’s exaggerated disgust. Despite her protests, she secretly sneaks him scraps of food, fond of the old hound’s protective instincts toward her bustling brood of halfling children.

Barkley is loyal to a fault, fiercely protective of those he considers “his pack,” whether that’s Helene’s kids, street urchins, or temporarily… adventurers.

Role in Gameplay:
Barkley is more than just a lovable neighborhood dog—he’s an unofficial guardian and can serve as a helpful NPC in various situations:

  • Finding Missing Children: If Helene’s kids (or any children) go missing, Barkley can track them down with his sharp nose, leading players through crowded streets or hidden alleys.

  • Danger Sense: Barkley’s instincts kick in before trouble strikes. His barking, growling, or nervous pacing can act as an early warning for ambushes or magical threats.

  • Temporary Companion: While he’s devoted to Helene’s family, Barkley may “adopt” the players for short stretches, especially if they’ve earned his trust with kindness (or snacks). However, he always returns home eventually, loyal to his first family.

Unique Traits (Optional Mechanics):

  • Keen Senses: Advantage on Perception checks related to smell or hearing.

  • Stalwart Guardian: Barkley will not back down if children are in danger, granting him temporary hit points and advantage on attack rolls against threats to his "pack."

  • Tracking Expertise: Proficient in Survival for tracking, with advantage when following familiar scents.

Quirks and Habits:

  • Loves to chase pigeons, often barreling into carts, stalls, or unfortunate pedestrians in the process.

  • Has an inexplicable hatred for laundry lines—frequently pulls clothes down “on accident.”

  • Whines dramatically if not fed promptly, but will “guard” an empty bowl as if it’s filled with treasure.

Adventure Hooks:

  • “Barkley’s Trail” – Helene’s children go missing after sneaking into a dangerous part of the city. Barkley frantically seeks out the players, trying to lead them to the kids.

  • “The Hound’s Warning” – Barkley refuses to leave a spot where something unseen is lurking—a hidden assassin, cursed object, or magical rift.

  • “A Dog’s Loyalty” – If a player is severely injured or unconscious, Barkley may stay with them, even refusing to leave their side until help arrives.

Barkley may not be the smartest or most graceful creature in Lygos, but his heart is bigger than the city itself, and his loyalty can be as valuable as any sword or spell.
