Selune's Wake

a massive three-masted galley with reinforced hulls and enchanted sails said to gleam under moonlight. Flagship of the Lygos Navy.

Crew of the Selûne’s Wake

1. First Mate Merribelle “Granny Tide” Overhull

Halfling First Mate & Lorekeeper of the Sea

Appearance: A wiry halfling woman with weathered skin, a gray braid tied with driftwood beads, and laugh lines deep as tide marks. Her eyes are pale blue — bright and sharp, like moonlight on waves.

Personality: Stern but warm; she’s the crew’s mother, counselor, and disciplinarian rolled into one. Merribelle knows every sailor’s superstition, every sea shanty, and every tale of lost ships and cursed treasures. She insists knowledge of the sea’s moods saves more lives than any sword.

Mannerisms:

  • Constantly hums old ballads under her breath.

  • Carries a battered spyglass older than some crew members.

  • Calls everyone “child,” even Admiral Fluvius.

Reputation: Known across the fleet as “Granny Tide,” she’s said to have served on a dozen ships — and outlived them all. Some swear she can smell a storm days before it hits.

Quote:

“The sea’s an old woman like me — fickle, fierce, and never wrong twice.”

🔥 2. Gunner Kerwyn Emberwake

Dragonborn (Brass) Gunner & Master of Cannons

Appearance: A bronze-scaled dragonborn with a scarred snout and soot-stained claws. His armor smells faintly of saltpeter and sulfur, and he wears thick goggles around his neck.

Personality: Proud, technical, and just a bit arrogant about his craft. Kerwyn views artillery as an art form — each cannon a masterpiece, each volley a symphony. He’s endlessly tinkering, designing new fuse systems and custom shot patterns.

Mannerisms:

  • Taps his claws rhythmically while thinking.

  • Names every cannon personally (“Lady Tempest,” “Moon’s Voice,” “The Persuader”).

  • Always muttering equations, ranges, and wind adjustments under his breath.

Reputation: Considered the foremost expert on gunpowder warfare in Lygos. The other crews say he “shoots like a dragon breathes — with purpose.”

Quote:

“Gunpowder is the language of thunder. I just happen to be fluent.”

3. Sergeant Dorn Ironbeard

Duergar Marine Commander

Appearance: Stocky, gray-skinned duergar with a beard thick as kelp, braided through with seashells and shark teeth. His coral-inlaid battleaxe glimmers faintly like wet stone.

Personality: Gruff, unflinching, and loyal to the bone. Dorn doesn’t laugh often — but when he does, it’s a booming bark that shakes the galley. He’s a soldier through and through: discipline first, rum second, mercy last.

Mannerisms:

  • Talks to his axe (“She bites harder than any sea-beast”).

  • Files his teeth with a coral shard “for intimidation.”

  • Keeps a pouch of sand from every shore he’s fought on.

Reputation: When the Wake boards an enemy ship, Ironbeard is first through the breach — gray blur, roaring oath, and axe cleaving a path. The crew calls him “The Tidebreaker.”

Quote:

“The sea don’t forgive cowards. Neither do I.”

4. Arannis Waveglint

Wood Elf Navigator & Ship’s Musician

Appearance: Slender and sun-browned, with long auburn hair tied in a sailor’s knot and bright sea-green eyes. She wears a compass on a chain and carries a fife at her hip, always gleaming clean.

Personality: Calm, poetic, and ever-smiling — Arannis finds peace in charting both stars and hearts. She sees navigation as an act of faith: “Selûne's light guides those who look up.” When tension runs high, her fife’s melody keeps the crew’s courage steady.

Mannerisms:

  • Hums while marking charts.

  • Keeps seashells arranged by size and tone on her desk.

  • Can steer by starlight with her eyes closed.

Reputation: The Wake has never once lost her course under Arannis’s watch. Sailors whisper she can “hear the moon.”

Quote:

“Maps show the world as it is. Music shows it as it could be.”

5. “Bosun” Bram Merrick

Human Cook & Enforcer of Morale

Appearance: Round and rosy-faced, with muttonchop sideburns, a stained apron, and arms thick as barrels. His uniform is perpetually dusted with flour and authority. He wields a massive iron ladle he calls “The Admiral’s Discipline.”

Personality: Blustering, loyal, and loud. Bram runs the galley like a military barracks — spotless, punctual, and absolutely intolerant of grumbling. He insists “a fed crew is a loyal crew,” and his meals, though simple, are hearty and timed with naval precision.

Mannerisms:

  • Calls everyone “son” or “miss.”

  • Barks orders between bites of food.

  • Has a sixth sense for gossip — and stamps it out with a ladle to the skull.

Reputation: Known as “Bosun Bram”, the unofficial morale officer and brawl-breaker. Mutiny dies in his galley — often before dessert.

Quote:

“The Admiral feeds you, the Wake carries you, and I keep you from talkin’ treason in either.”

6. Skeerra Brightwing

Seagull Aarakocra Spotter

Appearance: White-feathered Aarakocra with gray streaks on her wings and piercing blue eyes. She wears a harness of brass spyglasses, signal flags, and rope. When she dives, her wings snap shut like a crossbow’s arms.

Personality: Brash, proud, and prone to squawking laughter. Skeerra lives for open sky and the rush of wind — she can’t stand being below deck for long. Her reports from the crow’s nest are usually half-yelled and half-cawed.

Mannerisms:

  • Clicks her beak when impatient.

  • Caws twice before every announcement: “CAW-CAW! Sails ahead!”

  • Sharpens her talons on the crow’s nest rail daily.

Reputation: Famous for spotting enemy sails hours before other ships’ lookouts. Her dive attack is legendary — she’s been known to strike an enemy lookout from the air and leave nothing but blood on the rail.

Quote:

“I see everything. And if I don’t, I dive till I do.”

Atmosphere Aboard the Selûne’s Wake

The Wake gleams like moonlight on steel — her decks scrubbed spotless, her crew drilled to perfection. The banner of Lygos flutters high on her mainmast, silver crescent on indigo. At night, lanterns along the rail cast pale light across the waves, and Arannis’s music drifts across the deck while Bram’s stew fills the air with spice and comfort.

The crew are patriots, veterans, and believers — not zealots, but people bound by trust and duty. They joke, they sing, and they fight with the calm certainty that Admiral Fluvius Lovetide leads them toward honor, not slaughter.

Where pirates curse their luck, the sailors of the Selûne’s Wake murmur a prayer to the moon and charge forward — their courage shining as brightly as the goddess they sail under.
