“We deliver with a smile — and a loaded crossbow.”
1. The Twin Deckhands: Pip and Puck Thistledown
Halfling Sailors, Maintenance & Labor Crew
Appearance:
Nearly identical halfling twins with curly brown hair, bright green eyes, and identical mischievous grins. The only way to tell them apart is their earrings — Pip wears his on the left, Puck on the right (a system Captain Destrian insists on for “everyone’s sanity”). They’re wiry, quick-footed, and perpetually barefoot.
Personality:
The twins bicker constantly — about knots, deck chores, and who’s better at “talking to the sea gulls.” But if anyone insults one of them, the other turns fierce in an instant. They’ve been with the Mermaid’s Kiss since they were children, and it’s clear they love both the ship and their crewmates like family.
Mannerisms:
-
Finish each other’s sentences (and often talk over one another).
-
Play pranks on passengers — harmless, but clever.
-
Have a running bet on who can climb the mainmast fastest (usually ends in swearing and laughter).
Reputation:
Efficient, loyal, and endlessly talkative. If something breaks on the Kiss, the twins have already fixed it before Destrian even notices.
Quotes:
Pip: “If it squeaks, I can patch it.”
Puck: “If it leaks, I can plug it. Don’t ask how.”
Together: “The Kiss don’t sink, love — she just naps on the waves!”
2. Valessra Duskweaver
Drow Navigator & Passenger Liaison
Appearance:
Strikingly beautiful with smooth obsidian skin, silvery-white hair tied in a loose braid, and eyes like violet moonlight. She dresses in crisp white shirts and sapphire sashes — elegant yet practical. Her movements are fluid and assured, like someone who’s always one step ahead of the wind.
Personality:
Warmly charming but with a razor’s edge. Valessra’s wit is as sharp as her navigational sense. She’s polite to all guests, subtly flirty when it helps business, and absolutely unflappable in a crisis. Though her past in the Underdark is whispered about, she rarely speaks of it — “The surface has better views,” she’ll say with a smile.
Relationship with Destrian:
Their chemistry is unmistakable. The crew jokes that she’s the ship’s “North Star,” and Destrian’s compass always points to her. Both laugh off the rumors — but her quarters are conveniently next to his.
Mannerisms:
-
Traces her finger over the ship’s railing while thinking.
-
Keeps a small silver compass engraved with the sigil of a moonlit spider.
-
Never raises her voice; even in chaos, she commands calm.
Reputation:
“The prettiest face and the sharpest mind on the coast.” No port official can resist her charm, and no storm seems to throw her bearings off.
Quote:
“The sea is a jealous lover — you must charm her anew every dawn.”
3. “Echo” the Kenku Spotter
Crow’s Nest Lookout & Mimicry Expert
Appearance:
A sleek, black-feathered Kenku with a patchy gray cloak and a long-barreled crossbow slung across his back. His eyes are bright amber, always scanning the horizon.
Personality:
Quiet by necessity, mischievous by choice. Echo communicates mostly through mimicry — often to comedic or unnerving effect. He repeats crew voices perfectly, sometimes combining them into eerie “choruses.” Beneath the mischief, though, he’s vigilant, loyal, and deadly accurate with his crossbow.
Mannerisms:
-
Mimics the sound of the waves or the creak of the mast when bored.
-
Flaps his wings when amused — like laughter.
-
Mimics the captain’s voice to startle new passengers.
Reputation:
Known as “the voice of the Kiss” — if you hear your own words shouted back from above, Echo’s probably warning you (or mocking you).
Quote:
In Destrian’s voice: “Storm ahead! Secure the rigging!”
Then, in Pip’s: “Aye aye, Captain Handsome!”
4. Bront Stonewake
Goliath Oarsman & Ship’s Guardian
Appearance:
A mountain of a man — bald, tattooed, and broad-shouldered. His skin bears the gray hue of river rock, and his eyes are as pale as seafoam. He wears little more than rough trousers, a belt of ship rope, and carries a massive chunk of driftwood as his preferred weapon.
Personality:
Taciturn, steady, and fiercely loyal. Bront doesn’t waste words — but when he speaks, the entire deck listens. He takes pride in his strength and his role as guardian of the Kiss. When in port, he stays behind, arms crossed, watching over the ship with quiet vigilance.
Mannerisms:
-
Speaks rarely, but always with precision.
-
Scrims tattoos into his arms — each representing a voyage completed.
-
Stares down troublemakers until they leave on their own.
Reputation:
After a group of dock thieves tried to rob the Mermaid’s Kiss one night, only one survived — and he swore to every tavern in Lygos that he’d seen Bront “turn into a storm.” No one’s tested the claim since.
Quote:
“The sea doesn’t sleep, and neither do I.”
About the Mermaid’s Kiss
A sleek, two-masted cargo ship painted in hues of teal and cream, with a carved figurehead of a mermaid blowing a kiss toward the bow. Her sails are trimmed in silver thread — more for show than speed, but passengers love the sight.
Below deck, the ship is tidy, smelling faintly of citrus oil and salt. The crew quarters are modest but comfortable, and the passenger cabins — though not luxurious — are clean and private. A small galley doubles as the crew’s social heart, filled with the sound of halfling laughter, Valessra’s soft singing, and Echo’s uncanny imitations.
Captain Destrian Castelot runs a tight but fair ship. He and his crew are available for hire — for travel, light cargo transport, or escort service. His reputation is spotless, though rumors persist that some of his “side deliveries” might be less than entirely legal.
Still, if the players need reliable sea passage with personality and safety, no ship is more trusted than the Mermaid’s Kiss.
