Minto Barrelbreeze

Vintner

Halfling Vintner & Bard | Hopeless romantic, musical nuisance, unflappable optimist

“My sweet thornbush, your cruelty only makes my wine more robust.”

Appearance:

Round-cheeked, twinkling eyes, always slightly tipsy. Wears an embroidered vest with grape motifs and carries a small lute he calls “Dandy.” He is always smiling. Always.

Personality:

Relentlessly cheerful. Makes up songs on the spot. Speaks in rhymes when nervous. Offers wine to everyone he meets. Totally unfazed by rejection, sarcasm, or threats.

Believes that true love endures all things, including mossy insults and poisonous glares.

Backstory:

Minto runs a tiny vineyard just outside Lygos, known for its "Heartblush Red." He writes all his music for Dandelia Greenthorn, names all his vintages after her moods ("Spiteberry Dry," "Reluctant Rose", "No Means Merlot"), and insists he’s just waiting for the right moment.

Their Dynamic:

Dandelia: “This is the man who once wrote me a sonnet comparing my breath to ‘swamp mint.’”

Minto: “That was a metaphor for vitality and earthiness, my feral angel.”

Dandelia has moved into the forest, but Minto has built a wine cart with off-road wheels just to follow her to her druid circle.

Despite her disgust, she always accepts his wine—because it’s excellent, and she knows it.

How Players Can Interact:

Situation                             Outcome

Ask about their history    Dandelia will groan and narrate it bitterly; Minto will narrate it with romantic nostalgia

Need a skilled druid or a rare herb             Dandelia can help—if you make Minto leave the room first

Need a distraction, musical distraction, or someone to charm a guard        Minto is happy to oblige with a love song so intense it causes psychic damage (mild)

Try to match-make or push them together             Dandelia will hex you mildly. Minto will thank you sincerely.

Try to break them apart You’ll have more luck separating fungus from roots. But you may plant a seed of doubt…

Minto’s Greatest “Hits”:

·        “My Dandy, so sandy, so mossy and grand-y…”

·        “She cursed me once, but I said 'thank you', for it rhymed with ‘heart's debut.’”

·        “This next number’s about how she yelled at me for six straight hours. I call it ‘Sporeplay.’”

Sample Dialogue:

Dandelia:

·        “I swear on the Rotting Grove, if he rhymes ‘Dandelia’ with ‘delir-ya’ again, I will make him breathe mushrooms.”

·        “I kissed him once, during a thunderstorm, because I thought he was going to die. A mistake I now see daily.”

Minto:

·        “Each cruel barb she throws is another blossom on the vine of our love.”

·        “Her rejections are simply the bassline to my heart’s melody.”

Side Quest: “Aged to Perfection”

Quest Level: 3–6

Location: Lygos outskirts, vineyard region, and into the forested hills

Reward: Magical wine, Dandelia’s reluctant friendship, and deep RP payoff

Hook:

The party is approached by Dandelia Greenthorn, the famously snarky halfling druid, storming into town with a scowl and mud on her cloak.

“I require assistance. That idiot minstrel-vintner has gone and gotten himself kidnapped. I’m not worried, of course—except about his precious vineyard. If he doesn’t come back soon, the vines might wither. And worse, the wine might stop flowing. So... are you free?”

Despite her harsh words, her tail is twitching anxiously, and she won’t meet your eyes.

The Truth:

Minto Barrelbreeze has been kidnapped by a gang of goblin wine raiders—yes, that’s a thing. A small band of goblins has developed a taste for his Heartblush Red and decided to abduct the source rather than keep raiding bottles.

He’s currently being held in a rickety old winery ruin in the forest hills, tied to a barrel, and writing a ballad about his rescue.

Twist:

One of the goblins (Snagga) has fallen for Minto’s charm, and is trying to woo him. She’s got a veil made of grape leaves and calls him “my squishy fruitcake.”

Minto: “I’m flattered, but alas, my heart belongs to another—one who threatens me with fungal decay on a regular basis.”

Quest Beats:

Investigate the Abduction

Minto’s wine cart was found overturned near his vineyard.

Tracks lead to the hills, with purple grape stains and lute strings as clues.

Dandelia’s Reluctant Company

She insists on coming along.

“I’m not worried or anything—I just know how to deal with woodland idiots. That includes you.”

If the party comments on her concern, she changes the subject or glares daggers.

Infiltrate or Storm the Winery Ruins

The goblins are drunk, singing Minto’s love songs terribly.

They’ve made a “goblet throne” for him out of corks and stolen silverware.

Rescue Minto

·        He’s unharmed, though mildly tipsy and dramatically tied to a barrel.

·        He immediately serenades Dandelia upon seeing her.

Goblin Snagga may become a comedic rival, following the party for a few sessions in a doomed attempt to “win him back.”

Conclusion:

Dandelia pretends not to care even during the rescue.

“You owe me two bottles and one fewer song, Barrelbreeze.”

If the players tease her, she grumbles but lets them see the ghost of a smile.

As thanks, she offers each party member a bottle of her favorite vintage (infused with minor healing properties or a luck effect).

Minto gifts the players a songbook of wine-themed love ballads, including “To Cork and Back Again.”

Optional Rewards:

·        Dandelia’s Favor: She becomes a contact for natural remedies, potion ingredients, or druidic insight.

·        Minto’s Wine: The party receives bottles that grant small buffs (e.g., temporary hit points, +1 to Charisma checks for an hour, or advantage on one saving throw).

·        Snagga the Goblin Wine Lover: Follows the party for comedy or chaos, declaring one PC her “fermented fate.”
