Durgrim “Hollow-Note” Ironthane
Retired Adventurer • Dwarven Bard (College of Valor) • Lorekeeper of the Adventurer’s Guild
Appearance
Durgrim Ironthane is a scarred, stone-faced old dwarf, his beard a tangled gray waterfall streaked with black remnants of youth. The right side of his face bears a burn scar that tugs at his mouth, giving him a permanent half-smirk. His left arm is covered in faded tattoo bands marking dungeons delved, monsters slain, and companions lost.
Despite his grizzled exterior, he dresses with surprising elegance:
- a deep burgundy vest,
- worn traveling boots polished daily,
- and a cloak lined with old adventuring patches.
His viol — an instrument of dark walnut with a cracked but lovingly repaired neck — rests at his side like an old friend.
Personality
Durgrim is equal parts:
- storyteller,
- drinking buddy,
- and philosopher of the road.
He has a smooth, warm tenor voice that catches newcomers off guard, so different from his rough appearance that it often hushes the noisy hall the moment he begins a tune.
He alternates between:
- Raucous tavern songs that leave tables pounding and mugs clinking, and
- Slow, haunting ballads that bring tears, silence, or the chill of prophecy.
He enjoys watching adventurers react — that’s how he judges their hearts.
Durgrim is generous with advice when someone shows humility, and infuriatingly cryptic when they don’t.
Habits & Mannerisms
- Begins every song with: “Listen close — truths hide in the strings.”
- Picks at his viol absentmindedly, even while talking.
- Smacks young adventurers on the shoulder and mutters, “Keep your shield up.”
- Always saves the last sip of his ale “for absent friends.”
- Gazes into the hearthfire between songs, as though watching ghosts dance.
- Sometimes pauses mid-conversation, lost in a memory both painful and beautiful.
Backstory
Durgrim once traveled the realms as part of The Ember Vault Company, an adventuring party famous two decades ago. Their exploits became tales passed around campfires — until a disaster in a forgotten ruin claimed most of the group.
Durgrim survived.
Barely.
He returned with:
- scars that ache in cold weather,
- nightmares he buries in song,
- and a viol crafted by his fallen lover, Thalia the Harper.
When he plays it, he swears he can still hear her harmony beneath his notes.
Too old to adventure, too restless to retire fully, Durgrim took up residence in the Adventurer’s Guild, becoming its unofficial bard, greeter, counselor, and historian.
Role in Your Campaign
Durgrim is a treasure trove of hints for players:
- He knows ancient dungeons and their dangers.
- He recognizes obscure monsters from a single description.
- He can identify magic items by song — “Every relic hums its own tune.”
- He drops foreshadowing in veiled lyrics.
He can:
- Give quests
- Provide warnings
- Teach survival tricks
- Identify magic lore
- Reveal secrets about guild politics
- Sing ballads about future villains in disguised metaphor
He’s the perfect “wise old man,” except with beer foam in his beard and a shocking sense of humor.
Sample Songs

For gold and glory — and soft warm mattress!”

I still hear your step beside me…”

“Beware the shadowed lord who grins,
With borrowed crown and stolen sins…”
