Flow, the Pink River Dolphin

Gentle Wonder of the Dragonfang River • Protected by Law and Fierce Fisherfolk

Description

Flow is a rare pink river dolphin, her skin a soft rose-hue that glimmers beautifully whenever she breaks the river’s surface. She has bright, curious eyes and a habit of exhaling in short, excited chirps when she recognizes familiar fishing boats.

Her dorsal ridge is slightly heart-shaped, and a white streak runs along her forehead — marks that make her instantly recognizable even from afar.

She always swims with a smooth, unhurried grace… unless she’s chasing fish or greeting a fisherman she knows.

Why She’s Special

Pink dolphins are unheard of in most of Faerûn’s rivers, and Flow’s appearance decades ago became a local legend. Some believe she was blessed by a river spirit; others say she is a magical offshoot of the rare river dolphins found far to the south.

Whatever the truth, she is seen as a symbol of luck, safety, and prosperity for those who work the Dragonfang.

Flow’s Place in Dragonfang Culture

Veteran Fisherfolk’s Beloved Guardian

Every seasoned fisher on the Dragonfang knows Flow by name. When she surfaces near a boat, they cheer like children:

“Flow’s here! Pull the nets, lads!”

Within moments:

  • nets are raised,
  • hooks reeled in,
  • and boats drift lightly to give her space.

Stopping work for Flow is law, tradition, and superstition all in one

A Fierce, Quirky Enforcement Culture

If a newcomer doesn’t stop fishing?

They’ll be:

  • loudly scolded,
  • lectured about respect,
  • and pointedly warned about harming protected species.

If they continue?

Let’s just say veteran fishermen are not above:

  • shoving a boat off course,
  • “accidentally” knocking an oar overboard, or
  • outright tipping the boat if the offender is especially stubborn.

They will always apologize afterward…

but only after the lesson is learned.

River Protection Laws

Lygos passed the Dragonfang Wildlife Preservation Act specifically because of Flow. It is illegal to:

  • hunt
  • net
  • harpoon
  • trap
  • or interfere with

any dolphin in the river.

Offenders face:

  • heavy fines,
  • suspended fishing licenses,
  • and possibly jail time.

Yet everyone knows the fishermen enforce it better than the government ever could.

Flow’s Personality

Flow is unusually friendly, even for a dolphin. She:

  • recognizes familiar boats
  • plays in bow waves
  • nudges drifting logs for fun
  • performs leaps when excited
  • sometimes guides lost fishermen through fog or reeds
  • steals hats (and gives them back)
  • splashes people she likes

Some swear she understands Common.

Some say she saved their lives.

Children adore her, and elders claim she brings good fortune.

Flow’s Stat Block (Noncombat, Friendly Creature)

Tiny hint: she is never to be threatened casually — she is protected by culture and law.
