Varro Trinketsbane

Shopkeep

Varro Trinketsbane

Collector of Curiosities • Buyer of Exotic Trophies • Artisan of the Strange

Appearance

Varro Trinketsbane is a tall, wiry human in his early fifties with sun-browned skin and a mane of curly black-and-gray hair tied back in a loose tail. His eyes are a vivid amber — sharp, calculating, and always roving.

He dresses like someone who has traveled the wild places of the world:

  • a patchwork leather coat adorned with feathers, fangs, and beads
  • a bandolier of tiny glass jars, each containing oddities (e.g., dry lizard tongues, beetle wings, slivers of dragon scales)
  • an apron with pockets overflowing with tools, clasps, wire, bone polish, and tiny carving knives

He carries a walking stick carved from the rib bone of a giant wolf (or so he claims).

Personality

Varro is:

  • enthusiastic to the point of intensity
  • deeply curious
  • charmingly eccentric
  • absolutely passionate about unusual creatures
  • borderline obsessed with “the beauty of the natural unknown”

He treats trophies with reverence — like relics, not prizes.

He speaks quickly, using strange metaphors:

“A basilisk scale is like frozen sunlight. You can hear the fear trapped inside.”

He is never cruel to animals himself… but he pays extremely well for pieces collected by adventurers.

His Shop: “The Bestiary Boutique”

A cramped, dim shop tucked into a narrow side-street of Lygos. Inside:

  • walls covered with masks, animal skulls, exotic hides, and bizarre skeletons
  • shelves of preserved specimens in glowing alchemical fluid
  • display cases of jewelry made from talons, teeth, scales, feathers, and shells
  • chimes made from antler segments tinkling softly in the breeze
  • a strange, pleasant herbal smell mixed with faint animal musk

There is a sign on the counter:

“No refunds. Nature takes no returns.”

He keeps a huge ledger listing his requests and bounties. Most are strange. Some are alarming.

What He Buys

Varro buys almost any piece of an unusual creature, but especially treasures:

  • Owlbear talons
  • Griffon feathers
  • Manticore barbs
  • Hydra teeth
  • Displacer beast whiskers
  • Ankheg chitin
  • Dire wolf fangs
  • Giant serpent scales
  • Bulette claws
  • Shark teeth (landlocked adventurers always ask how he gets them)
  • Basilisk eyelids (never the eyes — too dangerous, he says)

He will quietly whisper offers for:

  • Wyvern stinger venom sacs
  • Roc eggshell
  • Unicorn hair (but only if ethically obtained — he refuses poachers)

What He Makes

Varro crafts:

  • amulets
  • charm bracelets
  • decorated scabbards
  • trophy plaques
  • enchanted jewelry (lightly magical, when given materials)
  • war paint pigments ground from rare feathers and scales
  • totems used by shamans and druids

He swears some items “carry the spirit” of their source creature.

Mannerisms

  • Polishes talons while speaking, never looking up
  • Leans in far too close when discussing rare beasts
  • Talks to his trophies (“There, there, beautiful wyvern tooth… your time has come again.”)
  • Flicks dust off bones with a feather brush
  • Has a dramatic habit of gasping at new items as though beholding art

Hooks for Players

1. Odd Requests

Varro posts a new, specific — and high-paying — request:

  • “I require five griffon feathers untouched by fire.”
  • “Bring me a single manticore tail spike intact.”
  • “I need the left tusk of a dire boar, not the right. Trust me.”

The quests may lead into wilderness encounters or mini-dungeons.

2. Rare Beast Sighting

He hears rumors of:

  • a mutated chimera,
  • a ghostly stag,
  • a river serpent near the cistern,
  • or a giant tortoise nesting in a forbidden marsh.

He hires the party to investigate — and acquire a trophy if possible.

3. Ethical Dilemma

Varro refuses to buy from poachers and demands proof:

  • If a magical creature was endangered
  • If it was killed cruelly
  • Or if it was sentient
    …Varro won’t touch it.

He may even send adventurers to stop poachers harming rare beasts.

4. A Rival Collector

A visiting noble or black-market dealer challenges Varro, offering better prices — but with sinister motives. Varro quietly asks the PCs to “discourage” the competition.

5. A Dangerous Commission

Varro commissions the party to retrieve:

  • a basilisk’s petrified tongue,
  • a choker’s larynx,
  • or a hellboar’s flame gland.

Each harvest requires skill, creativity, and danger.

Quotes

“Show me a claw and I’ll show you the soul of a creature.”

“Nature writes in fangs and feathers, my friends.”

“Oh, don’t mind the kraken beak. It’s only decorative.”

“If you bring me a roc eggshell, I’ll craft you something the gods themselves would envy.”

“Violence? No. Necessity? Yes. Respect? Always.”

List of Goods

Varro Trinketsbane's Trophy Request Ledger

“Beauty is where the wild things leave their marks.”

Bring any of the following items to The Bestiary Boutique in Lygos for appraisal and reward.

(Prices vary by condition and rarity.)

Item Requests

1. Harpy Feathers

“Preferably from the upper wing — less grubby.”

  • Clean, intact feathers fetch the highest price.
  • Extra reward for feathers with unique coloration.

2. Owlbear Talon

“Left or right, but must be whole.”

  • Talons still attached to a small piece of clawbed fetch more gold.
  • Cracked talons: half price.

3. Dire Wolf Teeth

“A pair is ideal, but singles are welcome.”

  • Especially values the canines.
  • Will pay double for teeth from an alpha.

4. Merrow Scales

“I require five, unbroken. The river kind is too brittle — get the true sea-beast.”

  • Scales should retain natural coloration (blue-green preferable).
  • Slimy residue: optional, but appreciated.

5. Basilisk Tongue

“Do NOT bring the eyes. Do NOT. Bring. The eyes.”

  • Must be removed carefully — tongues damaged by acid or fire lose value.
  • Tongue base intact earns bonus.

6. Griffon Egg

“Empty shell acceptable. Whole egg? Priceless.”

  • Shell fragments alone are still valuable for jewelwork.
  • Whole eggs must be transported with extreme care.

7. Stirge Beak

“Tiny, irritating creatures — but their beaks make wonderful amulets.”

  • Clean extraction required.
  • Bulk bundles of 5+ beaks are rewarded with a bonus.

8. Otyugh Tentacle

“Washed, please. Twice.”

  • Must be at least 2 feet in length.
  • Condition matters — intact suckers = better price.
  • Absolutely no attached waste matter accepted.

Notes From Varro

  • “Trophies should be as intact as possible.”
  • “I pay premium coin for items harvested with care.”
  • “Do not lie about provenance. I can always tell.”
  • “Return alive, if you can. I hate losing customers.”
