Thaddeus Merrishaw

Wool Baron

Thaddeus “Woolbaron” Merrishaw

Halfling • Livestock Magnate • Master of the Pastures of Pyra

Appearance

Thaddeus Merrishaw is a stout, rosy-cheeked halfling with a meticulously groomed blond mustache and a wardrobe made entirely of the finest wool his ranch produces. He wears:

  • a tailored wool vest with embroidery of sheep and oak leaves

  • a wide-brimmed sun hat held down by a ribbon under his chin

  • a fluffy alpaca-wool cloak for cold mornings

  • several rings carved from polished horn

His boots are spotless—a sure sign he spends more time managing than mucking.

Personality

Thaddeus is:

  • charismatic,

  • booming-voiced,

  • proudly pompous (but mostly harmless),

  • business-minded,

  • and utterly, passionately obsessed with wool quality.

He calls himself a “Woolbaron” and carries himself with the swagger of a duke—even though his kingdom is made of grazing fields.

He loves:

  • sheep

  • goats

  • alpacas

  • rare breeds

  • fleece contests

  • and bragging about his ranch like a noble boasts about a castle.

He is fiercely protective of his livestock and treats them like the treasures they are.

🐐 The Merrishaw Pastoral Empire

Thaddeus owns:

  • the largest open-range pastures outside Pyra,

  • multiple herding outposts,

  • shearing sheds,

  • drying barns,

  • dyeing cauldrons,

  • and breeding paddocks.

He employs teams of shepherds, many of whom live on-site in cozy stone cottages.

He pays well and believes in old-fashioned loyalty—his shepherds tend to stay for decades.

🛡️ Quests & Hooks Thaddeus Might Offer

1. Predator Hunt

Coyotes, wolves, giant vultures, or even magical beasts occasionally threaten his herds.

“My prize merino is missin’ an ear! An ear, adventurers! Not acceptable! Track down whatever did it!”

2. Missing Herd

A full section of his alpine goats vanished after a storm.

“That’s thirty-seven goats! Thirty-seven! I didn’t count ‘em twice for fun—I counted ‘em twice because I nearly fainted!”

3. Fey-Touched Sheep Investigation

Rumors whisper of a glowing, silver-fleeced sheep sighted near the hills.

Thaddeus is obsessed with acquiring it—ethically or otherwise.

“Fey-touched sheep! Imagine the fleece! The softness! The prestige! Bring me proof, or better yet… bring me the beast.”

4. Shepherd Protection Duty

During seasonal migrations, he needs extra security to protect:

  • lambs

  • rare alpacas

  • shepherds traveling through lightly patrolled foothills

5. Negotiator Role

Rival ranchers, jealous druids, or hungry bugbears may need “convincing.”

“I don’t want trouble. But I do want my grazing rights respected.”
