Brunna Highcairn

Explorer

Brunna Highcairn, Mountain Dwarf Explorer

Occupation: Expedition Leader, Naturalist, Cartographer
Age: 138
Personality: Enthusiastic, loud-laughing, stubborn, fiercely curious
Location: Lygos Museum, preparing her landmark exhibition

Description

Brunna Highcairn is a stocky, broad-shouldered mountain dwarf whose copper-brown skin and windburned cheeks testify to years spent in brutal alpine conditions. Her braided beard is streaked with silver and woven with beads shaped like tiny mountains. Her clothing is patchworked from expedition gear—fur-lined boots, heavy climbing harness, snow-stained leather, and a cloak fastened with an iron clasp in the shape of a yak’s head.

Her voice carries across the entire museum atrium when she speaks, which is often. She’s one of those rare dwarves who never learned to use an indoor voice.

She smells faintly of pipe smoke, leather oil, and mountain wind.

Backstory

Brunna has been leading high-altitude expeditions since her youth, charting unmapped passes across the northernmost Alimir Mountains, where storms swallow trails and the cold can freeze a man solid in minutes.

For decades, people dismissed her claims of “strange shadows watching from the cliffs” or “hoofprints where no goat could climb.” But on her most recent expedition, she found the truth:

A hidden plateau, ringed by jagged peaks, home to a secretive and culturally complex society of yakfolk—a species completely unknown to Lygosi scholars.

She spent three months among them, studying their customs, language, and mystical practices… and negotiating to bring a peaceful emissary back to Lygos.

Current Situation in Lygos

Brunna’s return has created a storm of curiosity—and controversy.

  • Scholars are begging for her notes

  • The Museum is overwhelmed preparing the exhibit

  • Nobles are vying for invitations to the unveiling

  • The Arcane Guild is anxious about the magical traditions of the yakfolk

  • Traders smell opportunity

  • Rumor-mongers fear invasion

Brunna, meanwhile, is having the time of her life.

She swaggers through the city with:

  • A yakfolk ceremonial staff gifted in friendship

  • A massive, fur-lined backpack still stuffed with expedition gear

  • Her new companion: Tamu the Emissary, a calm, towering yakfolk diplomat

She can barely walk ten steps without being stopped for questions, praise, or (annoyingly) autograph requests.

Personality

Brunna is:

  • Fearless in the face of the unknown

  • Incurably curious

  • Bluntly honest to the point of offense

  • Extremely protective of Tamu and the yakfolk culture

  • Proud of her discovery, but not arrogant—she insists the yakfolk deserve full respect

She also loves telling stories but has zero patience for embellishment:

“No need t’ make up nonsense when the truth is already stranger than dragon spit.”
