The Erlking

The Erlking

The Erlking is a cursed eladrin, who has been bounded to the confines of his haunted castle for many years. Only able to leave under the light of the full moon, the Erlking has seen most of the recent unfoldings of the Willowed Forest over the years, seeing the arrival of many of the influential players of the domain. Forced to sit and watch, the Erlking would unleash his wild side under the light of the full moon, going hunting throughout the forest, catching any game he could with a pack that he slowly built as curious fey wanders would come up to his haunted castle. Though he is cursed to live forever, the Erlking is not invulnerable, when he sustains damage the Erlking does feel pain, but to his dismay, the castle itself heals its wounded ward, The castle itself is an active participant in the Erlking's curse, acting as his warden, keeping him inside the grounds at all times. It used to be a beautiful building, full of elvish art and food, but now with only a darkened spirit, it has fallen into ill repute. The castle is home to a variety of spirits and ghosts, the place still marked by the destruction and death that Warnfathe had left in his wake so many years ago. The ghosts themselves keep the castle running, despite its haggard appearance, bowing to the Erlking's will and no question. The previous residences of the castle are bound to the Erlking's will, a fact that he has taken advantage of more than once, but more often than not he treats them with more respect than their former master.

But how did the Erlking's eternal punishment occur? It is sadly a quite simple one.

The king of the castle was looking for a queen, the only one he saw that was fit enough was the sister of the Erlking. Yeniviere was a kind woman, raised as a peasant girl but caught the eye of the king and became the queen quickly after. Her only condition was that her brother was made the court hunter so that he could remain in her life and close. The Erlking loved his niece and nephews, teaching them all he could and anything they wanted. This angered the king, causing him to be jealous of the Erlking. King Utha eventually found the Erlking guilty of an inflated crime, he threw the hunter in jail, hoping that he would rot for the rest of his natural life, but this was not so. When eventually the king imprisoned the Erlking, Yeniviere was distraught and refused to leave her tower for weeks. Her children visited her, but none could convince her to come down. She wept for days, but in between tears she hoped that something would rid her of the vile king. This wish was granted in the form of the Wolf Under the Forest, as he destroyed the small kingdom she tried to leverage the moment to free her brother, but the wolf wouldn’t have it. In the middle of the king issuing his curse, Warnfanthe pounced and ate what remained of his crushed body, leaving the grieving eladrin to himself, surrounded by the ghosts of his home.
