Dwarves in Stormhaven
Dwarves frequently competed with humans for being the most populous race in the region. When the calamity claimed the lands, the dwarves were already a resilient people with most of their strongholds located in the mountains or underground.
The dwarves of Stormhaven are descendants from a previous clan of dwarves that were caught in a strife between the Shivass drow and the high elves of the Whispering Woods. Their ancestral stronghold (Boltenburgh) were caught in the crossfire unintentionally, and the clan had to evacuate immediately or fall to either corruptive magic or disease. Many of the clans older and weakened members fell in the horrific scene - a tragedy that the dwarves have not forgotten.
Dwarven religion
Following the exodus of Boltenburgh, the dwarven clerics reached out to their primordial creator-god Moradin. As they ventured into the howling blizzards, their prayers went unanswered, and the warm embrace of the All-Father faded into nothingness. The dwarves were lost and abandoned. However, in the hour of their most dire need, another figure appeared before the dwarves, taking pity on their hardships, and offering them a way forth in the storm.
This figure was Faughryn, the enormous and imposing Lord of Frost.
With eyes glowing blue, Faughryn turned to face the storm, and split the howling winds, allowing for safe passage for the tormented dwarves that remained. Finding shelter in Stormhaven, the dwarves abandoned their pagan religion and took solace in the shadow of Faughryn - a deity that in many ways possessed some of the qualities that dwarves tended to embrace.
Dwarven craftsmanship
Due to the intensity of the weather the following years, the dwarves saw little possibility of connecting with former dwarven allies beyond Norrun. Instead, they focused their efforts on reinforcing Stormhaven, a city mostly inhabited by humans at the time, but strangely suitable for dwarven engineering. The dwarves carved beautiful indoor areas for everyone to take shelter in during hard times, with air vents securing air flow and impressive stone bridges connecting the two cliffsides. Much of what Stormhaven is today is a result of dwarven craftsmanship.
Following these early years, dwarves saw what almost was a golden age for them. Twins were frequently born, they never ran out of work, and they became an influential race in the city within only a couple of generations.
These days, dwarves have learned to integrate well with humans, while still remaining suspicious of elves and their erratic behavior. Dwarves tend to outlive humans, and so they often take up important political positions in the city, despite having never truly ruled it.
Boreal dwarves
While the city-dwelling dwarves are the most numerous, examples can be found of dwarves that have adapted well to the cold environment of Norrun. These dwarves wander the frozen plains, and live off the land. They are said to be a spiritual folk that are even closer to the Lord of Frost, yet their behavior and outlook on life is much different from their cosmopolitan counterparts.
