Gnomes were a reclusive people before the calamity, and their people suffered greatly from its effects. Save for the svirfneblin and rock gnomes, all other races of gnomes seem to have disappeared from the face of the world. The gnomes that lives on today are split between keeping to themselves and intermingling with the other races.
