Tolan Alvaras

Player Character

Character – Dungeons and Dragons

Name: Tolan Alvaras

Past occupation: Corporate fixer

Background: Tax collector

Class: Sorcerer

Bloodline: Aberrant

Personality:

Warm, kindhearted and extroverted. Talkative, charming, intimidating.

Parents:

Father: Michael Alvaras

-          Tolans father is a stern man. Living within his means and never

really using more than what he owns. He is tough but fair

rarely showing emotions but does on occasion.

Does not approve of Tolan’s line of work but understand the need

to find work where you can, coming from where they live.

He found solace in working as a caretaker in a bank after

his wife passed away. Michael did not have any magical powers.

Mother: Sarah Alvaras (diseased)

-          Sarah died when Tolan was about 15 years old. She was a loving, warm and kindhearted woman. She had a natural gift of talking to people around her and had many friends. She had witch-like talents to help and heal people in need. There was almost 100 people gathered at her funeral. Sarah did not have any magical powers either to the best of everyone’s knowledge. Sarah died in a very unfortunate accident, but no one really knows exactly what happened other than she fell from one of the towers. She had Heterochromia too

Younger Brother: Kalan Alvaras

-          Kalan and Tolan unfortunately drifted apart, they used to be very close as children but as life took hold and life became a reality, they both ventured on different paths not before Kalan showed Tolan the underground from where Tolan found his occupation. Kalan works mainly in the shadows, and no one is exactly sure what it is he does specifically. Most importantly however, is, Kalan takes care of Michael and supports Tolan whenever their paths crosses.

Kalan is a bit of a harsh person, hurt by the death of his mother but his heart is in the right place.

Story of the Aberrant Bloodline of the Alvaras’:

Sarah and Michael did not have much information about The Havero[1] Cult, nothing other than the Cult prayed and sacrificed to Havero, an ancient aberration, a being of unknown powers.

All that is known is Havero eats worlds, planets, solar systems & galaxies. To the Cult, the phrase: “Eternity in the bellows of darkness of the one true God, is an eternity of solitude and joy” is the prayer in which they sing to the skies to contact Havero.

Since the Cults inception it has gone underground or completely vanished

All that is known about the Cult is it has attempted to draw Havero

closer to Kaldashia in hopes it would consume the world.

Why these fanatics have chosen an aberration monster as their one

True God is unknown and what their real intentions or motivations are,

are yet to be discovered.

It is said that the Cult was defeated by the forbidding of magic or at least,

they practice their obscure occultism in the shadows.

Few bits and pieces can be found in libraries, old scrolls and books

describing the Cult, it is mostly known to historians and people who seek

the occult though you can run in to the odd rumor here and there.

There is only one real event that has made it to the history books and

Become common knowledge.

The event was appropriately named: The Blood Birth.

A truly horrific event, well described but mostly avoided but known to

those who wants to know.

When the stars aligned according to the Rapture the veil between our world and “the other realm” were at the thinnest.

It was during this moment The Cult have gathered at the most central point of Kaldashia, at the Church of the Palatine eye to reach the thinnest layer between realms with their pregnant leader.

She laid on the Church altar to give birth as the hymn of Solitude was sung and many occult spells was cast into the barrier between realms. What exactly happened in this ritual during those moments of labor into birth is unknown, but the result is ever as frightening. A girl was born, infected with the blood of Havero. A new bloodline was made. The Aberrant Bloodline of the Alvaras’

Many years have since passed since that event and no strange occurrences

have happened in the time since. A few stories of a few sorcerers in the family

tree sure, but nothing substantial to claim this is a bloodline of sorcerers.

When Sarah died something activated within Tolans blood and his powers

came into existence. It was very hard to control at first because of the general

emotional outbursts of a teenager but as the years took hold, he got better

control of his emotions and therefore better control of his powers.

Tolan Alvaras – Occupation, life and magic

Tolan have always been a warm, kindhearted and charismatic

Young man. Helping where he could and have been very generous

to people around him.

A trait he adopted from his mother.

With his mother’s passing he acted out as any other teenager of that

age would do but got the grips of his life back in his hands by finding

work and doing the odd commodity here and there.

It didn’t happen until his father helped him get an understanding that

a life worth living is a life of love and abundance.

Michael was there for Tolan and his brother Kalan

through the hard times after their mothers passing but they

ended up getting closer together as a family in the years after.

As the years went on and the outbursts of magic from Tolan took a toll in the family you could kind of sense the danger around them, but they were good at protecting each other in the Alvaras family.

In a very unfortunate event – at least if you ask Tolan (some might say he slightly overreacted) Aberrant magic came into existence. The outburst happened because a spoiled son of a Nobleman couldn’t control his horse and ended up kicking Tolan in the back, so he fell forward into a puddle. Tolan hurt his neck, a somewhat big wound in the back of his head appeared and blood started flowing out.

In the moment he started gathering his strength to stand up again, he could only hear the loud laughter from the Nobleman’s son, Eric Sterring – Fuck that sleazy prick – and his entourage.

Tolan could feel the anger take over him but instead of resisting this time, Tolan, in a fit of rage let the magic take control.

Wild black tendrils appeared all around the area, you could almost see the veil between realms tear and giant tentacles appearing from the sky above, Tolan in full control of all the chaos around him.

His Heterochromia appearing in full force turning his left eye

completely blood red,

as he lets the tendrils grab him and lift him up in front of Eric

and his entourage.

In an almost whisper Tolan just utters one word

“Run!”

Eric and his entourage of mates and horses scramble together,

falling over their legs and tendrils, being slapped, hit, pushed

and forced around as they run away from Tolan.

… And in an instant, the tendrils are gone.

It wasn’t until after the entourage ran away an elderly woman

told Tolan who they were. Eric Sterring, son of no other than

Sir Olaf Sterring, the founder and owner of Sterring Financial.

Fuck

As you might have guessed Tolan was later

arrested and taken to court where Tolan was

charged with use of illegal magic of 1st degree, disturbance

of the peace, damage to public property and defamation

of the good name Sterring. Trialed in a court of law

… What a joke. And sentenced to either 10 years in jail with

a fine of 150.000 Gold pieces or he could serve his sentence

as a laborer for Sterring Financial. Tolan of course chose

the labor, he could see from Erics reaction

that it bothered him Tolan got that option so why wouldn’t he continue to smear it in his stupid face.

Tolan was 20 at the time.

Oddly enough it wasn’t long into the sentence/job that not only Olaf but Tolan noticed he had a gift of convincing people to pay their dues, their taxes and fees on time, with little to no intimidation.

Of course from time to time he used it but working for Sterring Financial, Tolan all of a sudden got a free pass to use his magic – within reason of course, and obviously in secret but he could use his magics without repercussions.

Tolan grew to get better control of his magics, starting to enjoy his job as a Tax Collector – at least that was his description at the time.

Tolans hard work put him at the forefront of promotion and to the absolute banter, it still pissed Eric off but Tolan was untouchable.

The amount of gold he brought in and how he handled the situation put him up as what is more accurately known as a corporate fixer.

A person who works to fix the unfixable problems, things the Nobility needs to have fixed but can’t touch due to stature. Tolan fixed rumors of everything from cheating on the wife, to breaking financial laws, to insider trading. He helped Sterring Financial grow and become the most powerful financial institution in the realm.

With real insights in what happened behind the curtain and how the Nobility and those with funds and means treated people who didn’t have it, he started to grow uneasy.

He saw how they put laws in place for the peasants that would not apply to the Nobility, how they asserted their control and forced people to work in inhumane conditions at the shipyards, the masonries, the mines.

There was something inside him that just couldn’t sit and be apart of this. He couldn’t watch as people like his father and brother struggled to make ends meet, however, he also knew that he couldn’t just leave the job.

He knew too much.

Having this uneasy feeling but knowing there was an

end to the committed contract, he started thinking about how he could get out of the situation. He met a dwarf in the mines with the name Bolgar, a leader of the Workers Union (Wu) whom he sensed had real kindness and understanding to him.

Tolan confided in him about his job, his position, the things he had to do and how conflicted he was about it and worst of all, if he stopped doing what they asked, they would seek him out and kill him.

It wasn’t until Tolan realized all the paperwork he had fabricated and forged about safety conditions in the mine that he could use that to his advantage.

He made sure to ride out the sentence and work for Sterring Financial for another year, to show them that he was “committed” to their cause but once that term was up, he went down to the mines to “fix a problem with the Union” something that he had done many times before, to great success (to the dismay of the miners)

And set up a contraption to fake his own death.

Big explosion happened; part of the mine collapsed.

Tolan was gone.

Only Bolgar and Tolans family knew that Tolan was a changeling,

Tolan had shed his skin, leaving behind “evidence” of his death

in the mine collapse.

To the best of his knowledge, his scheme worked to perfection

Present day:

Tolan have been successful in hiding from his original employer

He’s been taking the odd adventuring job here and there and

shown real skill in solving mysteries, doing quests and best of all…

killing monsters.

A natural feeling of justice drives him forward in life, he helps

people where he can, all within reason, he must eat after all.

For the most part he gets away with killing smaller monsters

without using his powers but no the few occasions where he

have no choice, it is an extreme grim sight.

His magic is not that of other Wizards or Sorcerers, with

beautiful incantations, big movements but his magic comes from

within, it soars out of him, and it looks evil. It probably is

but Tolan is far from evil, a good person, with a good heart and

that seems to be enough to hold the Aberration at bay. Give him control over the powers.

Tolan have started to investigate the background of his bloodline, where does his powers coming from?

He is sending letters in code to his father on a somewhat regular basis, communicating with him about his background and what he knows.

Unfortunately, it is very little Michael knows about their background, all he knows is that many years ago the Cult successfully infected the blood of their pregnant leader and in result gave birth to the first child of The Havero Cult, it is not exactly certain how the Alvaras’ people were a part of this, but it is rumored that the first Alvaras woman, was the leader of the Cult. Whether that is true, is not known and is not commonly known either. The Trinket that his mother gave Tolan is clearly involved somehow as well but nothing is known about it yet. The Alvaras’ is a family of decent standing in their community and almost no one knows about The Havero Cult.

However, their bloodline is not like other sorcerers who seems to have their powers activated through birth, the powers in the Alvaras bloodline seems dormant in all Alvaras’ and as if it’s waiting for a “trigger” before they take effect. Tolan have learned that the Cult have disappeared into the shadows, there are very few followers – if any at all. Tolan has no desire to follow the Cult and have decided to use the powers for good.

His father has told Tolan that the Trinket he got from his mother, has gone down from many generations.

It is very old, and it is said that it’s very powerful.
