Description

Winter's memorial Hollow and the most sacred space in the Freehold. The Frost Ledger is located in the deep Interior, accessible by a Trod that is deliberately unmarked — you find it by knowing where it is, not by following signs. This is Winter's preference. The memorial is not hidden, but it does not advertise itself. Those who need it know the way.

The Hollow is a natural ice cavern that should not exist in the Hedge's dream-logic but persists regardless — walls of pale blue ice that do not melt, a ceiling that vanishes into frozen mist, and a silence so total that your own heartbeat becomes intrusive. The temperature is cold but not dangerous, a chill that settles into your bones without threatening them. The Frost Ledger is not hostile. It is simply honest about what it holds.

The names of every Changeling who has died in service to the Last Hearth are carved into the ice walls. The carvings are done by hand, by Nix, the Ledger's keeper, using tools that have been passed down through a succession of keepers since the Freehold's founding. The oldest names are near the entrance, faded but legible. The newest are near the back, where fresh ice continues to form as though the Hollow itself is making room. There are more names than most Changelings expect when they visit for the first time. The reaction to that realization is usually silence.

The Frost Ledger serves two functions. Day to day, it is a place of private remembrance — Changelings visit to sit with the names of people they lost, and Winter's tradition is that no one is ever disturbed in the Ledger or asked why they came. Once a year, on the Winter Solstice, Nix reads every name aloud in a ceremony that is the emotional centerpiece of the Freehold's calendar. It is the only time Nix speaks. The reading takes hours. No one leaves early.
