The Emperor of the First Eternal Imperium of Valdros serves as the highest authority within the Imperium and is recognized as the ultimate source of Imperial law, legitimacy, and governance.  Though much of the day-to-day administration of the Imperium is carried out by noble houses, governors, magistrates, military commanders, and countless officials all authority ultimately traces its origin to the Imperial Crown.

As ruler of one of the oldest surviving civilizations in the known world, the Emperor is regarded by many as both the guardian of Imperial tradition and the steward of its future.

Duties of the Crown

The Emperor possesses the authority to issue Imperial decrees, appoint governors, grant titles and privileges, negotiate treaties, oversee military campaigns, and arbitrate disputes between the great houses of the Imperium.  In practice the responsibilities of governing such a vast nation require cooperation between the throne and the numerous institutions that support Imperial rule.  As a result successful Emperors have often been remembered as diplomats, statesmen, and mediators as much as rulers.

The Name Valdros

By ancient traditions, each Emperor assumes the name of Valdros upon ascending to the throne.  The origins of this custom have long been debated by scholars and historians.  Some claim Valdros was the first Emperor, while others believe the name belonged to an ancient ruler, dynasty, kingdom, or people from whom the Imperium traces its earliest origins.

Whatever its true beginnings the name has become inseparable from the Imperial Crown itself.  For most citizens of the Imperium, there has never been an Emperor who was not Valdros.

Public Reputation

Opinions regarding Emperor Valdros vary throughout the Imperium.  Supporters view the Emperor as the living symbol of Imperial unity and continuity, a ruler tasked with preserving a civilization that has endured for countless generations.  Critics argue that the Crown has grown distant from the daily struggles of ordinary citizens and that much of the true power of the Imperium rests elsewhere.

Even among those who disagree on matters of politics few deny the significance of the throne or the influence it continues to exert upon Imperial society.

Legacy

For centuries the Imperial Crown has stood as one of the defining institutions of the First Eternal Imperium of Valdros.  Kings, warlords, republics, and entire nations have risen and fallen throughout history, yet the line of Valdros has endured.  Whether viewed as a symbol of stability, traditions, authority, or ambition the Emperor remains one of the most influential figures in the known world and a central part of the Imperium's identity.
