The Dominion of Dragons
Aurum is the homeland of the dragons and their kin. It is a vast, expansive wilderness, with every biome imaginable, with blistering deserts, frozen wastes, barren rocky peaks, dense bogs, and everything in between. Rather than having distinct kingdoms with clear border, the lands are divided up amongst the dragonlords. These ancient dragons use their power and will to subjugate their smaller siblings and lead the native races of Aurum.
The chromatic dragons of Aurum are cruel dictators, who get what they want through violence and fear. They are organized into strict hierarchy with larger dragons ruling over the smaller ones, all the way on up to the dragonlords. Backstabbing and upheaval are common, and the only way dragons gain position is by killing the one above them and taking that dragon's place. As dragons age and grow, they either kill or they are killed by their rivals. In this dragon eat dragon world, it's not uncommon for chromatic dragons to get fed up with their position and fly away to other continents, where they are free to subjugate that continents creatures without interference. Even if they live elsewhere, a dragon will always come back to Aurum to mate. Creating a new dragon egg is a sacred experience and every dragon who has ever lived was born in The Nursery, a massive volcano in the center of the continent.
At the lowest rung of the chromatic ladder are the kobolds. These diminutive dragonkin serve as the peasantry in chromatic dragon society, living under the thumb of one dragon or another. They spend their lives working to please their dragon masters, through goods and gold or through battle. Legions of kobolds make up the armies of the dragonlords and will battle other kobolds and the dragonborn in the name of their ruler.
The metallic dragons stand in sharp contrast to their colored cousins. They are fundamentally good in nature, and see the power and magic that dragons hold as a force that should be used fight against darkness. Several factions of the metallic dragons exist, each serving a different dragonlord. The metallic dragonlords are also sometimes referred to as liege lords. They see each other as allies in the fight for territory and power against the chromatic dragons. Although metallic dragon society is structured in a similar way to chromatic dragons, their social classes are generally based on respect and deference to wisdom. The younger, smaller dragons follow the lead of their elders and listen to their life experience.
The foundations of metallic factions are the dragonborn. Dragonborn are dragonkin that are taller and more humanlike than their kobold cousins, but clearly display the features of dragons. Although they can be born with any coloration, even chromatic color, the dragonborn live in the society of metallic dragons and tend to take on their devotion to justice and fighting evil. Living in constant war against the chromatic dragonlords, almost all dragonborn societies have a mandate of selective service. At a certain age, each dragonborn is required to join the army of their liege lord for a period of time, usually to fight against the kobold legions and defend their lord's territory. This is reflected in the way they live as well. Each dragonborn knows how to fight and each town sends their young men and women into war
