If it is laid down on a nautical chart at all, the Roaming Isle – also known as the Island of Last Refuge or the Misty Vale Isle – is most commonly placed at a point three hundred miles west of Waterdeep, ninety miles east of the Whale Bone Islands and fifty miles north-northeast of Westhaven at the tip of the Korinn Archipelago. However, ships in distress as far as two hundred miles from that position have reported finding it, miraculously appearing during an unexplained calm in a storm.
It is largely believed that Valkur grants passage to the island just as hope begins to fade for a foundering ship and crew, but it is unknown whether he magically moves the ship or the island. Most sailors will swear to the latter, hence the island’s most well-known moniker.
Ships attempting to reach the island under favorable sailing conditions often find it difficult to do so, especially if there is any malicious intent or a strong evil presence amongst the crew. Shifting currents, cross seas, varying winds and malfunctioning navigators’ tools are commonly reported. However, if there is a follower of Valkur, or at least someone aboard who has visited the island before, the seas seem to carry the vessel directly there if they get anywhere close to its assumed location.
