Darwin

An only child, Dr. Robert Stein was always a bright one. In school he got straight A’s (at least when he tried), and at home he loved running experiments whether they be from store bought chemistry sets or studying the insects in his lawn. He was sort of an instigator, and would get into the occasional scrap with classmates or disobey his teacher’s seemingly pointless commands, but he was a good kid at heart, and was very loving towards his friends and family. Robert’s parents were never wealthy, but between his stellar grades and a few well worded essays, he secured a full ride scholarship to the University of Chicago.

In college, Robert studied biochemistry, and was a natural at it. It was almost as if he could see the building blocks of life itself, although of course he couldn’t yet. For his graduate research he developed a novel drug to aid in brain surgeries and brain-machine interfaces, which unbeknownst to him caught the attention of a Free Council mage by the name of Outrider. Outrider grew fascinated by this up and coming scientist, and took on the role of mysterious benefactor, funding and aiding in his research from the shadows. That is, until Robert awakened. 

When Robert woke up it was to a waking dream, and he was already running, running from something that felt like it was right on his heels, but in his terror he felt more alive than ever before. As he ran the world around him began to dissolve into patterns and symbols until he could see reality as nothing more than a sea of primal energy. The walls whispered his name, the grass writhed in ecstasy, and ahead of him stood a watchtower wrapped in vines. Something deep inside him knew, he had to reach the tower, had to mark it with his name, and he couldn’t let the beasts catch him. He fell to all fours, running faster and faster, his hands becoming paws. He reached the tower and leapt to the top in a single bound. As quickly as he could he carved his name into the tower and spun around to face the beasts, but they were gone, and Robert stood alone in his lab, but the patterns remained. 

That day he would meet Outrider face-to-face for the first time as he came to induct him into the free council and show him the ropes of mage society. That day his real life began. His life as Darwin.
