Session 128->132: Grey Caverns Assault

October 8, 2024

After finding the entrance to the base, we decided to form a plan of attack. I had a cunning plan to move forward using my new silence to try and get through the base as sneaky like as possible. Unfortunately the spell was too powerful as nobody in the party heard me. Our new friend began scouting ahead and was quickly alerted to guards coming to the bathroom, so we moved swiftly to try and avoid detection.

The rooms adjacent appeared to be sleeping quarters, which caused our first issue : Woodsworth. His celestial light threatened to wake up all the guards sleeping, leaving us in a tight spot. A portion of us started moving forward to try and see what was ahead, but guards began to rouse as sound outside of my spell's effect had alerted them. From there things descended into chaos.

We tried moving to those that had woken up and began to knock them out / kill(???) them. Cleis broke away from the group to I assume deal with a different group. I couldnt hear anything from the spell so I had no idea. Half of us had moved west and the other had moved north. After enough time had passed, it was clear that our cover had been blown. I dismissed the spell and began applying my own spells to aid me in battle. As the group rejoined, Woodsworth had conjured a wall to stop the incoming guards and give us time to prepare. I also noticed most of our other allies were missing their weapons for some reason but I assume its a good one.

We will need to see what we can do from here. We may need to retreat to avoid being overrun. When we regroup we should figure out what our next plan is if we are unable to find and apprehend the sniper.

Session 130/131: Deeper into the Grey Caverns

A long battle ensues. Firearms, yells, and explosions echo through the cavern. This would be a battle of control and endurance as the team slogs through the criminals in various rooms. An armory for crafting arms and ammunition is located packed with explosive gunpowder barrels. It would be several minutes before the crew encounters Niles directly, but still unable to see him in a large war council chamber with cornhole games along the wall. This room would be filled with explosions and death soon after as the team crashed through but not without letting Niles escape to the next chamber.

The Vanguard is in quick pursuit, stepping into the next room and Niles is spotted in plain view on a wooden bridge surrounded by explosive barrels. The ensuing engagement allows Niles to slip out of reach, using height and range to avoid direct confrontation. After severely wounding Woodsworth with a necrotic style shot, and suppressing the rest with firearms fire with agile movements, the gap would be closed after heavily wounding him. He would slip away with a quick teleport once again, much to the group's frustration. They frantically start hunting around for him, uncertain where he may have fled to.

Session 132: Niles Falls

With Niles gone, the group scrambles to look for him. Its possible he wasn't far away.

Fortunately, Ripley located Niles on the surface. Unfortunately, Niles was ready for her. Several gunshots later and Ripley was taken from us, her life robbed by her longstanding nemesis. Woodsworth, who managed to position himself before the fatal blow, was in just the right spot to bring Ripley back in this bleak moment, saving her from certain death. The threat still loomed and was still threatening Ripley's life, and was swift to nearly take it again without the saving grace of a heroic effort from Zael. With the gang grouping up and rallying once again, they could advance on Niles once again.

Niles quickly found himself without much room to run. Harried by magical artillery, Ripley managed to race up close to the lean gunsmith and shoot him in a final showdown.

Without much time to spare, Fortunes Vanguard would recover and start getting busy with securing the facility they spent the last 5 minutes assaulting. Loot was gathered, Niles engineering feats were investigated, and the remaining unconscious creatures were secured in a room and given a lecture. A number of named bullets were found, likely to help ensure Niles power over others or ability to assassinate any needed adversary at any time. There wouldn't be a lot of time to spare before the meeting with the Slow Cart Foundation.
