"Have you ever seen it? The grey walls lining the river. Silver banners above caught in a northern breeze. The smell of the sea in your nostrils, the mountain air in your lungs, and a red tower glinting over the horizon. I can hear it now, the sound of brass trumpets ringing out, and a dragon's roar from on high. Perhaps I will see it again."
-The last words of the Aegyri Soldier, Relgis of Aegyr
Aegyri Culture
The Dragon Kingdom
By the end of the 2nd era, the leader of a unificatory council of dragons, a golden dragon named Varenzoth, realized his time as head of the council was coming to a close. His father's endeavor, which he inherited, was coming to an end. The previous eon's successes with uniting dragon-kind together were slowly falling away, as each century rogue dragons rebelled and left the council to brood over a treasure horde somewhere in the world. Varenzoth, who saw chaos coming, and his power fading away, knew he needed to do something to secure his line and position, no doubt the remaining chromatic dragons stayed only so that they could betray him when time was right. So, he decided the council itself was no longer enough, and needed an event, a symbol, a carrot to promote loyalty, and a stick to punish betrayal. He settled upon establishing a kingdom for himself, from which he could rule as a resplendent King, not just of dragons, but of men. The wealth and power that would flow to him from this would be enough to satiate those who had their doubts. The choice of city was easy, Aegyr, and the surrounding Arissian province of Aegyrii. It was not only the second jewel of their empire, controlled vital trade routes, and was well fortified; it had a large population of dragonborn, who the Arissians invited as refugees many years before. Such a population would be needed if he was to rule well, and not simply swallow the province up. And so, the close to the 2nd Era of Adra came by dragon fire, and the Aegyri Dragon Dynasty was forged out of the bloated corpse of the Arissian Empire.
The Dragonborn population of Aegyr took well to the conquest, as a swell of racial-pride and fervor took them by storm. The Aegyri Culture is a new one, having been slowly developing for the past 300 years, and in many respects, it is probably not fully formed yet. Still, there are aspects of it that distinguish it handedly from the nearby Lowland culture. Aegyri people are metropolitan, putting great stock and value in the idea of a city, and the opportunities that living in one provides. The Aegyri are extremely proud of their culture and nation, because they feel they are on the upswing of history, and accept being second to no one, other than the ruling Dragon family of course. The average Aegyri is much more tolerant of war and all that it brings than most people in Adra. This is because within the fortress city of Aegyr, surrounded by armies and dozens of dragons, any threat to the farmers in the Lowland kingdoms is hardly going to threaten the citizens of Aegyr. It is easy to mock a shark behind a foot of plexiglass. The Aegyri enjoy parties, and social gatherings of all kinds, not necessarily the debauched kind either, Aegyri often stay up hours into the night for a good conversation or stimulating debate. At first, the Dragonborn that constituted the majority of the Aegyri cultural population all valued their ties to family and clan more than anything, but as time has passed, the Aegyri have shifted their loyalties to the state, where it is common for Aegyri to view civil service or the military as virtuous career paths, as well as lucrative ones. Still, much of their familial ties have remained, though the Aegyri clans grow smaller and more dispersed each generation.
The Aegyri people are most highly concentrated in the city of Aegyr, and its surrounding towns and fortresses, particularly along the southwestern coast. There are also many Aegyri in the Lowland Kingdoms, where the Aegyri serve often in positions of authority, as advisors, leaders, soldiers, and civil servants. The races of the Aegyri are most predominately dragonborn and human, with groups of halflings, kobolds, and gnomes also having become members of the culture in smaller numbers. To the old Aegyri clans, the most important pantheon was by far that of Sorthal. However, in an effort at political theater, the royal family made Ariendale's the state pantheon of the Aegyr and its outlying lands. The worship of the merciful goddess has flourished, though still some ancient worshipers of Sorthal remain. Aegyri tend to be sociable, loyal, and bold. They also tend to be flippant, aggressive, and vein. While the dragons promote their dragonborn-dialect of draconic to be spoken by all citizens, many Aegyri also speak Middle Arissian (particularly the non-dragonborn).
