"I ask you, I beg of you son, do not follow in my footsteps. The bards sing tails and stories of valor on the field of battle - there is no valor to be found in the screaming of dying men, only nightmares."

-An Unknown Soldier from Manfried

Military Upbringing

The military life is a life of drilling, fighting, marching, and dying. Those from a military upbringing are sergeants and men-at-arms, archers, horsemen, siege engineers, sappers, battle magi, and others that make up the core of any fighting force. This does not usually include any nobles who live military careers, such as feudal knights, but would include well-respected professional soldiers like the Arissian Cataphracts.

Growing up with parents in the military is a stressful and turbulent kind of youth. It involves not seeing your parent for long periods of time, often never knowing whether they will return at all. The life of a military man or woman can also lay traumas into their psyche which sometimes leak out onto the psyche of a child. When at home, they are constantly vigilant, ready to be called away to war - if they are lucky, they can fill a post as a castle or city guard, a much less dangerous task than serving in the field. The children of these upbringings often become capable warriors themselves, but can just as often reject war and embrace a pacifism in their philosophy.

Characters from a Military Upbringing will have a trusty and sturdy weapon that once belonged to their parent or guardian, now either passed away or retired. This is a Masterwork Weapon, and can be any kind of weapon normally available to players. A masterwork weapon works as normal, and also is able to do better on critical hits: beyond just doubling the dice rolled, players can roll on a secret Crit Table corresponding to their class and level. Speak to the DM for more details.
