Firbolg
Key Similarities with Faerun's Version
- Firbolgs are giantkin, descended from the same ancient race as the Goliath are. However, firbolgs seem to have certain affinities with the wilds and even magic that most giants do not. It is believed by some that the firbolgs of today were once a race of giantkin who ventured into the feywild to avoid some calamity - when their descendants returned, they were forever changed, and the modern firbolg came out of this.
- Firbolgs have abilities that allow them to hide or blend in more easily than most people. As such, firbolgs are more likely to prefer means to avoid conflict rather than seek it - even firbolgs raised outside of the Bolgan culture will likely use their innate abilities in this way.
- Firbolgs tend to have pinkish or even purplish skin, and usually have bright red or reddish blonde hair. Firbolgs usually grow fairly long beards, with even many feminine presenting firbolgs growing goatees or the like. The most remarkable thing about the physiology of firbolgs is their skin - firbolgs form a tough outer layer of hardened skin by adulthood, which is hard, and somewhat brittle - firbolgs who are bludgeoned will show large cracks in their outer skin, sometimes with blood seeping through the cracks.
Key Differences with Faerun's Version
- Firbolgs, at least the ones in the native Bolgan Culture, eschew most social practices that the rest of Adra adheres to on some level. Firbolgs have a concept of biological relatives, but do not adhere to any family units, instead living as one large tribe, sharing all goods and shelter in common. They keep no real concept of gender, believing that folks have feminine, masculine, or other natures that one might express or emphasize over others. Firbolgs don't even have birth names or family names, instead knowing the fellow members of their tribe so intimately that all communication is handled with little nicknames or tonal changes that indicate to whom one is talking.
- Being the longtime victims of Grung slavery, most firbolgs, even those who have moved away from Arathia, deeply abhor the practice of slavery. This can put them at odds with much of the outside world, where systems of slavery are surprisingly common and accepted. Some major slave ports in Kelior have even in the past put bans on the admittance of firbolgs, for the fear that their sentiments would stir up slave revolts.
- Most firbolgs live in their communes in the central portions of the Rathian Jungle, as well as another jungle known as the Giant's Wood. Very few firbolgs find their way outside of Arathia, usually only knowing as much about the outside world as the existence of their neighbors.
