Exploring the West Sector
Space is big, and while planets are smaller, they are still quite big.
This means that the chances of randomly stumbling upon something interesting are close to zero, especially in the backwater that is the West Sector.
Missions, clues, and leads might lead you to specific coordinates: this narrows down the search a lot. Once you know where to look (like quadrant KK17, or Yint G-5), searching becomes a bit more practical. Searching in this way is done using a ship's scanners and a WIS Test (Tech) to interpret the incoming signals. Failing the test means that you do find what you're looking for, but that it might take longer than expected - and that you might've drawn unwanted attention.
A good thing to look out for are comms relays - these installations can be found on planets but also in space in the form of satellites. These ancient systems used to bundle and transfer comm data around the West Sector. They've fallen into disrepair but might be able to give more data on nearby points of interest with some tinkering.
Coming In For A Landing
Space stations and similar spaceborne installations can be docked to without problem, though some situations might require you to deactivate a station's defenses first.
Planet-side landing can be done in several ways:
- Depending on the planet's surface, multiple landing spots might be available. With a bit of luck, you can land right next to your destination.
- Keep in mind, however, that if you're planning to raid a pirate fortress, flying close to it might trigger surface-to-air defenses and put the base on high alert. It might be wiser to land further away and trek on foot. If you clear the base, you can always signal the ship to pick you up.
- In some cases, more extreme methods of entry might be desired, such as using a Jetpack to land in the middle of a base.
