Calliope - Session 77

Song
Oh, Captain
(Tune: a mournful sea shanty)

The only thing you have is a ship
And the tortured, wretched, souls on it
Only in your dreams will you ever know
(Only in your dreams)
The heroic facade you’ve borrowed

Your sword is closest you’ll ever get,1
To being the kind of star you covet
A traitor like you deserves nothing
(A traitor like you)
Not even this song that I sing

Oh, captain, you cut down
A rightful hero to the ground2
Is it because you can see,
He’s the kind of man that you should’ve been?

You are a man trapped in his own dream,
A victim of his own scheme
Anchored to the living,
To a crew tired of giving
You set sail, alone,
A bloody chair for a throne
There is no one left to help you3

Oh, captain, you cut down
A rightful hero to the ground
Is it because you can see,
He’s the kind of man that you should’ve been?

Footnotes

1A sword of stars. The stars of the Nether Sea. They are stars no mortal should see, at least not in life. And yet… I know them. I don’t understand how that can be? I can’t possibly have…

2I truly thought that Helikaon was dead. I tried to heal him, just like I have done so many times before, and he… wasn’t there. Just.. empty.

I was so angry when I thought he… I got a little reckless. More focused on hurting Estor than keeping me, or the others, alive. And Estor punished me for that mistake: cut me down to the ground. I think the only thing that kept me from passing out was my anger. And then he learnt it was a mistake to not make sure I was dead…

3Estor said some strange things… was annoyed at me for… being a distraction? To him now and… 500 years ago. He said he should have killed me centuries ago. Which means… he had a chance to, but didn’t? Is it because he didn’t want to? Or did something stay his hand? I don’t… ugh… I can’t remember anything!
