Session 138 - The Pit
Crimson sigils pulsed on the library floor, casting an eerie glow on the swirling dust. Theo, vanished in a swirl of smoke and illusory duplicates, drawing the unseen attention of the monsters. Hearts pounded like war drums as Calliope, Xan, Alke, Hippofilius and Braz took their positions amongst the towering shelves.
As the beasts moved out from the stacks of the library, Hippofilius conjured a swirling wind barrier, a shield against the encroaching darkness.
Choking fumes filled the air from the monster, but Hippofilius, whipped the air with a cleansing gale.
Calliope's enchanting song wove through the chaos, some creatures reeling back to the abyss and others meeting their end at her command.
One particularly fierce beast proved resistant. Braz, caught off guard, stumbled towards the pit. Panic clawed at the others, but Hippofilius, swiftly turning into a giant spider, snagged him mid-fall. The transformation didn't stop, though, and poor Braz emerged at the bottom of the pit, mooing in confusion, now a cow instead of a daring adventurer.
A clever move by Theo sent one of the beasts to the opposite side of the portal, and he held his concentration to keep him there.
The battle raged on, a blur of desperate spells and clashing steel. Xan and Alke fought side by side, a whirlwind of blades and lightning might, cutting down the remaining monsters. The last beast, weakened and snarling, dissolved into mist with a final, defeated rasp.
Chondrus reappeared from the stacks, stepped forward and with a flick of his wrist, he slammed the portal shut, severing the link to whatever horrors lurked beyond. It wasn’t even clear that he had moved from the platform following Theo’s disappearing act.
The portal closed, and the party stood in the stacks awaiting their next task.
