The origin of elves is not known to history. Some say that they were early Averans who crossed into the Feywild and were changed by its magic. Others believe the opposite, that fey crossed into the Material and became unanchored among the mundane.
Elves are slow to change, often reluctant to transition from homes, behaviors, and occupations. Their long dedication has made many elves into revered scholars and artisans as they span the generations of the shorter-lived.
Elves will, over time, naturally change to better match their environments. This has led elves to be among the most diverse of species:
- Eladrin are the descendents of those within the Feywild.
- High Elves (Sun and Moon) are the descendants of those who built the elven cities.
- Wood Elves are the descendants of those who dwelled within the natural landscape.
- Drow are the descendants of those who burrowed into the Underdark.
