Bear

Your character has a variety of abilities that come with being a bear.

• Ability Score Increase: Your Strength score increases by 2.
  
• Age: Bears reach maturity around 2 or 3 years old and live to an average of 20 to 30 years.
  
• Alignment: Bears are social creatures, kind and devoted to friends and family. Don’t believe the stories; they aren’t as chaotic or unpredictable as they’re made out to be. They value life, cooperation, and community, and tend to treat strangers as they would want to be treated—up to a point. Most commonly, awakened bears are neutral good.
  
• Size: Most bears range in size from 4 feet tall up to 8 feet tall. Depending on the type of bear you are, your size and statistics change in the following ways.
  • Big Ol’ Bear. You are one of the largest predators in the world, a grizzly bear, a brown bear, or maybe even a polar bear. Easily the strongest, sturdiest, and most intimidating of the lot, people often fail to realise that you aren’t just a meat-crazed murderer.
    
    • Ability Score Increase. Your Constitution score increases by 1.
      
      • Size. Your size is Medium.
        
  • Not Your Everyday Bear. Not all brown and black bears are huge. Others are more compact and know how to use their bodies to deliver a stronger swipe. The other types of bears fit here, too. This means you, sun bears, moon bears, spectacled bears, sloth bears, and pandas!
    • Ability Score Increase. Your Wisdom score increases by 1.
      
    • Size. Your size is Medium.
• Speed: Your base walking speed is 40 feet. You have a climbing speed of 30 feet.
  
• Hibernate: You know how to make the best of a nap! During a short rest, when you spend Hit Dice to regain hit points, you add double your Constitution modifier to the total.
  
• Pic-a-nic Time? As a bear, you have a fantastic sense of smell. You have advantage on Wisdom (Perception) checks that rely on smell.
  
• Poke the Bear: Your strength and speed are legendary, and you level that skill against any who might challenge you. You have multiattack, making two normal attacks per round. Challengers beware!
  
• Something-Something Necessities: You have thick, massive claws that give you a natural attack. Your claws do 2d6 + your Strength modifier slashing damage. This increases to 2d8 + your Strength modifier at level 5, 2d10 + your Strength modifier at level 10, and 2d12 + your Strength modifier at level 15.
  
• Languages: You can speak, read, and write Common and speak Bearish—a rumbling language spoken deep in the back of the throat.
  

Standard Racial Traits

• Ability Score Modifiers: Bear characters gain +2 Str, +2 Wis, and -2 Cha. (2 RP)
  
• Type: Bear are the Animal type. (2 RP)
  
• Size: Bear come in two sizes: Medium, and Large.
  
  • Medium Bears are Black Bears, Pandas, and young bears. They are Medium size and gain no benefits or penalites from their size. (0 RP)
    
  • Large Bears are Grizzlies and Polar bears. They gain a +2 size bonus to Strength and a –2 size penalty to Dexterity. Large races take a –1 size penalty to their AC, a –1 size penalty on attack rolls, a +1 bonus on combat maneuver checks and to their CMD, and a –4 size penalty on Stealth checks. A Large creature takes up a space that is 10 feet by 10 feet and has a reach of 5 feet. (7 RP)
    
• Speed: Bears have a base speed of 40 feet. (1 RP)
  
• Languages: Bears speak Ursine and one extra language of your choice. Ursine is a rumbling language spoken deep in the back of the throat. Bears with high Intelligence scores can learn any languages they want (except Druidic and other secret languages). Do note that as creatures of the Animal type, if they learn languages spoken by humanoids, they are physically incapable of speaking those languages without some sort of magical aid. (1 RP)
  

Defense Racial Traits

• Natural Armor. Bears have thick hides and gain +2 natural armor. (3 RP)
  

Offense Racial Traits

• Natural Attack: Bears gain a primary bite attack that deals damage according to their size. (1 RP)
• Claws: Bears receive two claw attacks. These are primary natural attacks. The damage is based on the creature’s size. (2 RP)
  

Senses Racial Traits

• Low-Light Vision. Members of this race can see twice as far as humans in conditions of dim light. (1 RP)
• Scent. Bears gain the scent ability. (4 RP)
  

Other Traits:

• Quadruped: (RACE) walk on all fours and have no arms - much less thumbs - with which to use weapons. Felines gain a +4 racial bonus to CMD against trip attempts, and  take a -4 penalty with man-made weapons, even ones they are trained in, unless they take a Weapon Focus feat. (0 RP)

Movement Racial Traits

• Climb Speed. Some bears are more skilled at scaling trees and have a climb speed of 20 feet, and gain the +8 racial bonus on Climb checks that a climb speed normally grants. This replaces natural armor. (-1 RP)
• Swim Speed. Some bears live a more aquatlic life style and have a swim speed of 30 feet and gain the +8 racial bonus on Swim checks that a swim speed normally grants. This replaces natural armor. (-1 RP)
  

Offense Racial Traits

• Grabbing Appendages: Bears have a small group of appendages that are useful for little more than to aid in grappling. Members of this race gain Improved Grapple as a bonus feat, and can maintain a grapple and still make attacks with their main appendages. This replaces scent. (2 RP)
