The History of Luachmhar

The ancient Celts, with their Druids, lived here a long long time ago. You can still find remnants of them scattered in the island's wilderness... The standing stones, the cropmarks, the mounds...

They lived alongside the Fae, or tried to, amidst their trickery.  Fortunately for them, the Nexus wasn't quite it is today.  The mana that it provided back then was much lower, so the fae magic was far less potent.

Vikings invaded the island, wiping out most of its inhabitants.

The few inhabitants left continued on.  Anyone who can trace their ancestry back to this time almost assuredly has at least a little fae blood.  The fae grew weaker, either retaining human-like height but dwindling in magical ability, or shrinking in size but keeping the full power of their Glamour. 

More human settlers arrive, bringing Christianity with them. These folks were refugees that were fleeing other Viking raids and looking for a new home. 

The Fae start to grow stronger again...

Christianity didn't spread very well to the Pagan inhabitants of the island.  There was conflict and bloodshed.  

Wanting to control the intersection of ley lines, demons invaded the island!  Angels came to stop them.  They say the sky was black - not just dark, but inky black - for nine straight days until... 

Brigid, known to Catholics as a saint, to the Fae as a Tuatha de Danann, and to Pagans as a triple goddess, arrived to aid the Angels in their protection of the island and its ley line intersection.  It's not known exactly what she did down there in the mountain, but this is when the Nexus was formed.  With its magic, the people of Luachmhar, human, fae, and all, banded together to fight off the remaining demons.  

They say Brigid will always be watching over the Nexus. 

From there, magic infused nature and strengthened the Fae.  It made its way into the hearts and minds of humans, and we started to see births of mages and sorcerers.  An alliance formed between the Christians and the Pagans of the island, and the The Slingers formed in order to protect and preserve the Nexus.
