The Court of the Chosen is the ruling government of Ren Shaar, consisting of an elected monarch and a council of their handpicked advisors. The current king of Ren Shaar is Hadar "The Reveler", who was elected almost unanimously by the city folk. However, his disinterest in running the state has given leeway for his advisors, consorts, and informants—many from influential merchant clans with ulterior motives—to manipulate Ren Shaari politics.
Nevertheless, King Hadar and his drunken hedonism is still legendary among the city's inhabitants, even if he hasn't been seen much in public since his coronation. The Ren Shaari are blinded enough by booming trade, as well as the frequent festivals of which the king and his harem are credited as the brainchildren of.
It's the distant country-folk that the Court has right to be worried about; many outlying farming villages have had little contact with the city since the last famine, coinciding with the Katagian Invasions. Nor has the Court bothered to resume taxation upon the boonies; burgeoning trade and visitation has kept their enterprises afloat, and the slum-dwelling masses are appeased by the "charity" of The Anointed cult. But now comes dire rumors of a populist faction rising in the countryside, armed with disgruntled peasants and plans to usurp the Chosen Crown.
Throughout Ren Shaar's tumultuous history, the Court of the Chosen has risen and fallen time and time again, establishing multiple iterations of elective monarchy. Its cultural sway over the city's citizens is strong; attempting to overturn this popular form of "democratic" rule is bound to cause an uprising. Likewise, an elected ruler whose regime grows unpopular may also risk an uprising.
In light of this situation, a sense of foreboding looms over the Court.
