Merwald Downs

🌾 Merwald Downs

Nestled amidst the vast, windswept plains of Gavony, Merwald Downs is a hardy, medium-sized town built for resilience. Low stone walls encircle the settlement, weathered and crumbling in places but still standing as a testament to the town’s determination to survive against the wilderness. Beyond the walls stretch endless golden grasses, rolling gently beneath the pale blue sky.

The town’s skyline is modest, with squat stone cottages and timber-framed houses clustered tightly together. Sloped thatched roofs, bleached by the sun and stained by countless storms, seem to hunch low against the ever-present plains winds. Dusty roads wind between the homes, leading to the town's modest marketplace, a hub of worn wooden stalls and sun-bleached cloth canopies that flap lazily in the breeze. There’s a worn, lived-in feel to Merwald, like a place that has survived generations by sheer grit.

🛡️ The People

The people of Merwald are plainspoken and weather-worn, clad in simple linen and leather. Farmers, herders, and traders make up the backbone of the town, their hands rough from years of working the plains. They’re friendly enough, but caution lingers behind their smiles. News travels slowly here, but the absence of the nearby Gavony Riders has weighed heavily on their spirits.

Lately, there’s an edge to their conversations. Eyes dart to the horizon, and many speak in hushed tones about shadows spotted in the distance. The fort’s absence has shaken their confidence, and some fear that the safety they’ve long relied on has abandoned them.

🌿 Key Locations in Merwald Downs

The Dustmarch Tavern : The town's largest gathering place, with a heavy oak door scarred by years of weather and rough customers. The tavern is always filled with quiet gossip, and lately, even quieter fears. The owner, Brynn Dustmarch, is a stout, no-nonsense woman who knows more than she lets on.

The Plainsward Market :A modest collection of wooden stalls where farmers trade crops and wares. Now, merchants worry about the safety of their routes along the Angel Road.

The Old Watchtower : In the center of the town stands an ancient stone monolith, carved long ago with runes worn smooth by centuries of wind. It's said to be a marker from a forgotten age, but lately, locals claim it hums faintly at dusk.

The Boundary Fence : Encircling the outermost edge of Merwald, this worn wooden fence marks where the cultivated land ends and the wild plains begin. It's little more than a symbolic barrier now, with several sections broken or falling.

The Hollow Smithy : A small forge owned by Garan Voss, a gruff blacksmith who’s been repairing broken tools and arming locals with makeshift weapons—just in case.

🌫️ The Tension in the Air

Merwald Downs is a town on edge. There’s an unsettling quiet to the plains, and some locals whisper of distant shapes seen moving through the tall grasses at twilight—too large for deer, too silent for wolves. Others speak of strange howls that carry on the wind, low and mournful, unlike anything they’ve heard before.

Most troubling, the Angel Road has grown eerily empty. Merchants are arriving late, their faces pale and eyes shadowed. Some report strange figures on the horizon, watching but never approaching.

Without the Gavony Riders, the town feels exposed. Vulnerable. And whatever threat lies beyond the plains, it feels like it’s drawing closer with each passing night.

🛤️ Adventure Hooks in Merwald Downs

The Missing Riders: Why have the Riders retreated into their fortress? Are they fighting something within, or preparing for an external threat? The town is too afraid to approach Rider's Lock—but the party could be the first to discover the truth.

Strange Disappearances: A few locals have gone missing after wandering too far beyond the town fence. The only clue? Broken sections of grass leading into the plains, vanishing into the distance.

Whispers at the Watchstone: Some claim the ancient monolith hums at dusk, and a few have begun to gather at night, praying or listening to the wind for answers. The monolith might be older and more powerful than anyone knows.

A Desperate Defense: With the Riders absent, the town may soon need to defend itself. The party could help rally the locals, repair the broken fence, or lay traps for whatever may be stalking the town.

The Shadow on the Plains: Shapes have been seen moving at night. Perhaps the players could scout the plains, searching for whatever is lurking out there.
