I was summoned by Monark Dick to investigate a possible traitor inside the village, and also deal with the Raiders that attacked Krocvil. I accepted both as my duty as a Ranger, and also because I care about our community, the Aironkru. So, I got out of his house, and started the investigation. I need to interrogate my fellow krus.
Setup
I took some time to use the rules of the Sector Map presented in Ironsworn Starforged to better visualize the Zone. Every hex will be a half-day's journey on foot (0.5 days). Krocvil is 4 hexes north of Metro (2 days of journey), and there is another settlement southeast of Metro that I will define some of its traits. Metro is located roughly in the center of the Sector Map.
- Krocvil has the Projects (called Focus from now on) Agriculture, and Subsistence. They rely on the Dinokrocs for food, and as beasts of burdens to help them in the farms they have.
- Metro has the Focus in Defense, and Trade. This is the Ark of the community, being the center of it all. Travelers from the other villages come here to trade, and know the current news. Additionally, the main HQ of the Rangers is located here.
For the third settlement I used some Oracles to get ideas...
Oracle: Settlement Name (Ironsworn) = 31. A creature. Why have the people of this settlement chosen this creature as their totem? How is it represented in art or rituals?
Oracle: Projects (Starforged), 2 rolls = 41 / 35. History and Exploration. Thinking about this, I changed History to Salvage to make it more appropriated to the setting.
Envision: I used some random generators from Mindjammer, and came with an idea for a creature common in the third settlement.
Creature: Spikebug. It is a creature mutated from a bettle that looks like a bee, it has some wings but it cannot fly because of its size (similar to a chicken), only for hovering. It also has a spiky carapace for protection. It is herbivore, and not a threat to humans. It also can be used to produce mushrooms, and some other edible plants.
The third settlement is called Spikevil, a walled place inside some ruins of the Ancients. It has its name because of a common creature used in their mushroom gardens, the Spikebug. The people here use the position of this village to explore some ruins, and scavenge tech from the World Before. They are also very near a Ruin infested region.
There are also two routes connection both Krocvil, and Spikevil to Metro. These work the similar way as the Passages from Starforged, and can be used to "fast travel" between the settlements. There is not a Passage to connect to other Sector like in the Starforged rules because of the setting.
Scene One
I go looking around the village for some clues about Uncle Krin, and how the Raiders were able to invade the village.
Gather Information: (+wits) = MISS (9 vs 9/10). your investigation unearths a dire threat or reveals an unwelcome truth that undermines your quest. Pay the Price. Failures Track = 4 boxes, 1 tick.
I began asking around about Krin, and what people were doing in the days before the invasion. I was directed to the main activities hub of the village, a type of bar or something. People usually gather there in their work breaks. I enter the place, it is still very dirty because of the invasion, but it was still standing, with some burning woods. When I get there a crowd starts gathering around me, and three men walk forward to meet me. They do not have a welcoming look...
First Man: Oracle (First Look, 2 rolls) = 23/93. Attractive and Wiry.
Second Man: Oracle (First Look, 2 rolls) = 22/36. Attractive and Flashy.
Third Man: Oracle (First Look, 2 rolls) = 82/8. Adorned and Threatened.
The three men look like they are from the same family of sorts, having similar appearances. One of them has a big piercing in his nose, and the other seems to be using better clothings than the general populace of this place. The man in the middle, the attractive and wiry one, is the first to speak: "Hey, you Ranger asking questions about Krin, get off here! Everything is at downhill after he passed here.". The other with better clothes also speak after the first man: "We gave a roof for him, and this is how he repays. Are you also a thief? The Rangers are always abusing the people!". After his words, other people in the crowd swings their heads and speak in confirmation.
I'm hesitant to start a fight here, but I need to be careful with my words, they seem very agitated because of yesterday, and it seems the Rangers have a bad reputation here. I try to calm the situation, and look for more clues, these men seems to be important here.
Compel: (+heart) = MISS (2 vs 10/8). They refuse or make a demand which costs you greatly. Pay the Price.
Failures Track: 4 boxes, 2 ticks.
I try to pacify them, explain the situation, and that I only want to help them as my duty as a Ranger. They don't seem to be getting calmer. Then the third men unsheaths his long knife and point it at me. "Get off, or maybe we need to teach you a lesson?". I gently put my hand on my weapons, as Boy starts growling.
"Look, I don't want to start a fight against you, but I won't leave the village. I have the permission to investigate about Krin, and the attack. Orders from the Monark. Maybe you need to stay calm, and back off. My last warning, pal". They get angrier, and prepare to fight me. I need to defend myself, and teach them a lesson, but I hope this don't end in more bloodshed.
I rapidly wield my machete, and Boy jumps on one of them. I shout to my dog: "pin on!", so he now know that he need only to hurt, not to kill, he is a smart boy. I use my speed and wits to try to disarm them instead of incapacitate, as well as to use the bar's environment to my advantage — tables, chairs, counters, etc.
Battle: (+wits) = STRONG HIT (8 vs 3/4). You achieve your objective unconditionally. You and any allies who joined the battle may take +2 momentum.
Current Momentum = +4.
I enter in a battle with the three, and Boy hits one of them, putting the big man to the ground, as he drags him by the legs — this boy is strong. The other two try to catch me, but I use some of the tables and chairs to not let both of them get at me at the same time. I disarm both of them, and hit them in the guts. The wiry man tries to initiate a grapple with me, but someone shouts outside: "Stop you fuckers! This is my property!".
We all look to the direction of the voice, and see...
Oracle: The person is female? Oracle (50/50) = Yes.
Oracle: First Look (2 rolls) = 2/14. Accented and Armed.
Oracle: Disposition = 19. Cooperative.
A woman speaking with an accent, probably not from Metro or Krocvil, maybe from Spikevil. She is carrying a shotgun, and aiming at me, and the other man. The third one is getting up. They look at her and try to explain they were teaching a lesson to me, but she scold them. "You are fighting in my property, and it is clearly he is protected by the Monark, are you trying to step on Mr. Dick? Are you crazy?".
We stop the fight, and the crowd is tense. She begins dispersing the crowd, and ask to me if I want to drink something. She has some information that I will need.
Oracle: Age = Adult from 26 to 35.
Oracle: Mutant hair color = Pink hair.
Oracle: Height and Weight. Average.
We sit down at the table, as she starts pouring something that looks like a brandy or a spirit of some kind. I ask her "so, you are the owner of this bar? It was opened but nobody came".
"Actually, its my father's. He is helping some folks near the entrance, and I was coming back to open properly the place. The door was busted last night". She talks casually like yesterday as another day like no other. It is unsettling. She continues: "And don't ask much about my hair, I was born like this".

We resume talking about what has happened, and I resume my investigation by asking her about what does she have for me.
Gather Information: (+wits) = WEAK HIT (8 vs 3/9). the information provides new insight, but also complicates your quest. Envision what you discover. Then, take +1 momentum.
Current Momentum = +5.
Reach a Milestone: She will give me information about Krin. Mark progress.
Vow: Discover what happened to uncle Krin = 2 boxes.
Vow: Recover What Krin Stole from Krocvil = 2 boxes.
She explains that Krin as one of the people who frequently visited her father's bar, so she know something about him, and she wants to help me solve things out.
What will I discover?
