The development of the Oceanykan "mecha" inspired similar research in other parts of the world, but nowhere as much as in Japan, where it inspired a whole genre of comics, movies, toys, and animated works. Mitsubishi Industries, with a sizeable hold of the Oceanykan motor vehicle market, was able to get a hold of numerous mechs and study their design, adding Japanese mechanical expertise. The result is the Mitsubishi Model 1968 "Mekaman", a bleeding edge multirole mecha, which uses novel hybrid electric drive and haptic technology for movement and manipulation, respectively. The Mekaman has been purchased in large quantities by the Japanese government for emergency services and policing, while megacorporations have expressed interests in its capabilities for heavy work such as logistics or mining.
