The Kingdoms of the Netherlands and Belgium, as well as the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, signed an agreement in 1958 to become a single supranational union in the world stage. All three nations possess their own king and legislative chamber, though the Union's executive powers lie within Prime Minister Gaston Eyskens, elected by the new Benelux Parliament. The 1958 agreement was based on intercontinental initatives that the European Coal and Steel Community and the Council of Europe presented, as well as an ever-present threat of a Soviet invasion. Though Benelux stands as an industrial titan of a nation, its armed forces and influence abroad are not nearly as pronounced as those of its immediate neighbours in France, Germany, and Britain. It is a member of the Euro-Gemein, and a staunch supporter of NATO (whose headquarters is in Brussels).
