The 5cm Granatwerfer 36 is a classic case of German overengineering. It had a complicated telescopic sight, cutting-edge baseplate and advanced ergonomics... for a weapon with a maximum range of 500m, a very light 5cm warhead, and which weighed ten kilograms more than its contemporaries. It was nominally retired from service mid-war, though German desperation for any weapons it could get its hands on meant that it continued operations until the entry of America into WW2. After the war it was sold off to any buyers, of which there were not many.
