The Democratic People's Republic of Korea, or the DPRK for short, is a totalitarian communist dictatorship which spans the northern half of the Korean Peninsula. It is led by its founder, Supreme Leader Kim Il-Sung in a ruthless police state, whose balance of power lies between the Army and the interior intelligence services. While it was previously far less authoritarian, increasing American involvement in Vietnam, the regrowth of Japan and an internal conspiracy which shook the DPRK's political establishment in the early 1960s have forced them unto this path. Juche, the state's official ideology, stresses values such as ultracommunism, ultramilitarism and ultranationalism. In this aspect it is similar to the extinct French "Neosocialism".
