The Korean War - Busan Defence Perimeter

World History - Atomic Age
August to September 1950

In July of 1950, the United States chose to intervene in the Korean War on the side of the Republic of Korea, forming the first United Nations Command. In its first engagement, the recently flown in Task Force Smith was almost annihilated by a communist armoured assault. This put into evidence that demilitarisation had left the US Armed Forces woefully underequipped to fight modern mechanised warfare. By August, UN control was limited to a small perimeter around the city of Busan, where US, ROK and allied forces put a desperate defence. As a general counter-offensive seemed impossible, the US sought an alternative solution which had worked against the French; a massive amphibious invasion.
