The Grand Duchy of Alsace-Lorraine is a country located in western Europe, separating France and Germany. It is a constitutional diarchy operating through corule by Grand Duke Willhelm-Karl Hohenzollern and Grand Duchess Marie Clotilde Bonaparte. The Duke represents the interests of Alsace-Lorraine's German population, while the Duchess represents French ones. Most power lies in an elected parliament. This country was created after World War II by Kaiser Louis Ferdinand's Neuordnungprogramm, a reversal of Germany's nationalistic foreign policy in favour of wider European integration and cooperation. Previously it had been an annexed territory of the German Empire directly under Berlin's rule, and it saw some of the heaviest fighting between French and German forces during World War II. In practice, however, Germany still has a hand on most of Alsace-Lorraine's decision-making.
