The Federal Port Authority is a heavily armed law enforcement agency / administrative dependency hybrid institution tasked with three missions;
- Enforcing the Oceanykan Constitution in every port throughout the country by looking out for and preventing the import or export of illegal goods (slaves and WMDs).
- Providing convoy escort for exports or imports organised by the Department of Commerce.
- Managing ports owned by the Government.
Its first two missions are fulfilled by a number of personnel on ground on sea, on different locations around the continent, and the FPA's Coastal Squadrons, warship formations able to fight back against the citizenry's own private naval flotillas if they are found to be in breach of the law. Like many other forces around the continent, the FPA's Coast Squadrons possess outlandish and disproportionate ships such as battlecruisers and light aircraft carriers for its duties, though they favour speed and technology over protection or firepower.
As the Department of Commerce file mentions, the last point is fulfilled through the control, maintenance and expansion of ports owned by the Federation, most of which lie within the Bass Strait Naval Complex and across the southern coast, though these are only 11% of the nation's ports by number and 17% by size. Fees may be charged for any services which the port may offer such as refuelling, resupply, rearming, repairs, the disembarking of goods, or simply for usage of the port (scaling by size).
