Cluster shells are hollow containers full of small bomblets, which it disperses over a wide area. These submunitions may be packed with explosives, chemical agents or shaped charges for anti-tank work. When employed correctly, a small number of cluster shells can produce mass casualties in a wide area. However, the manufacturing costs of all the little bomblets and their own independent detonation mechanisms is more expensive.
