"Squatter" is an Oceanykan term for subjects of the British Empire which illegally occupied land for cultivation and grazing, though it eventually evolved into a pejorative catch-all term for rural landowners. These people normally enjoy a much greater standard of living than their subjects, and daily life in the land which they own usually revolves around their household. Both the land and their home (usually a mansion or large house) are cobbled together and known as an Estate, usually self-sufficient and self-ruling to a degree. Though the concept of noblesse oblige (honor, generosity and responsibility to one's Estate and its workers) is widespread, cruelty and abuse are not unheard of, greatly depending on the family traditions of a household. Squatters are almost universally well-educated and raised with crushing expectations, so those which find themselves moving to the city will usually find success.
