The Bristol Centaurus is a British 18-cylinder air-cooled radial piston engine developed by Bristol Engine Company, unrelated to the brutal Bristol Australasia. Featuring a twin-row configuration, the Centaurus engine was known for its ridiculous and overbearing power, ranging from 2,500 to 3,000 horsepower. This engine was used to break the speed record of a propeller aircraft with the Hawker Sea Fury. Its large size and intricate construction give it these characteristics, though it is also extremely expensive and hard to maintain. Some Bristol Centaurus engines have been used, particularly in Oceanyka, to retrofit older machines, thus turning them into capable designs which can sometimes match jet fighters toe to toe. Such a design represents the pinnacle of piston-driven technology, though few were produced.
