The Lycoming T53 is an American turboshaft engine that was developed in the 1950s for helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft. It was designed by a team led by Anselm Franz, who also designed the first jet engine for the Messerschmitt Me 262. The T53 has a single-spool compressor, a reverse-flow combustor, and a double-spool turbine. It can produce anywhere from 700 to 1,800 shp of power depending on the variant and has been used on various models of the Bell UH-1 Iroquois, the AH-1 Cobra, the OV-1 Mohawk, and the Kaman K-MAX. It is one of the most powerful and accessible helicopter engines in the contemporary world.
