The Rolls-Royce Avon is a British turbojet engine introduced in 1950, produced by the famed Rolls-Royce Limited. It was used in a wide variety of aircraft, both military and civilian, such as the English Electric Lightning, Hawker Hunter, de Havilland Comet, and Sud Aviation Caravelle. The engine had a 15-stage axial compressor, a cannular combustor, and a two-stage axial turbine. It could produce up to 76kN of thrust with afterburning. The Avon was one of the most successful post-World War II engine designs, with over 11,000 units built, becoming particularly popular in Oceanyka with spare parts for German and Soviet engines scarce.
