The Treeby chain gun is a British .54 calibre belt-fed percussion rifle invented in 1854. While the design showed promise as ship point defence, the growing range of naval artillery proved too convincing a counterargument. However, the British Army bought and issued thousands of these rifles to Australian colonial forces, where they were expected to serve as wall guns in enclosed settlements. A hundred years later, Treeby chain guns may sometimes appear in long-forgotten military caches, firearm museums and in the hands of very desperate fighters.
