The wealth of the dwarven nation depends on two things: the trade of precious metals coaxed from the deep warrens of the Ungor Ril mine under Karak Durganaek and the incredible stoneworks produced by the war masons of Clan Granitehewer. Many a king would beggar his kingdom to pay the exorbitant fees charged by the Clan because the incredible fortress that the war masons build would be a fortress redoubt that would rebuff the worst violence the world of men could muster against it.
Logan's father, Torvald Granitehewer, is a war mason of great renown. Logan, like all the sons of the many Granitehewers, has been trained since the cradle to shape stone and build fortifications. He attended the most prestigious dwarven schools and learned the savage art of battle rage from the old master of fury himself, Thorik Drakksbane.
Logan longs to ascend to the vaunted title of war mason, but he must first travel the world as a rite of passage. Every rite of passage differs, but they typically take between twenty and thirty years to complete. For Logan's rite of passage, the high king Nainian Stonewind has sent him forth to:
- Retrieve the greataxe Grudgesettler, lost to Clan Granitehewer when Logan's great, great grandfather, Leman Granitehewer, fell to the orc warboss Gorfang Necksnapper while defending the high king Morgrim Ironbeard at the battle of Blackstone Pass during the orc Waaagh of 1762 BS.
- Collect a vial of water from the Spring of Fortune hidden in the icy crags of the Antler that the high king will use to bless Logan’s mason’s tools.
- Forge a set of Drakkscale Bracers (reflavored Bracers of Defense) from the scales of a dragon. These scales can be taken by might or by cunning.
