The human soul is, to modern religious thought, like a gem. It is a natural thing that shows its true beauty under the sunlight (sunlight being an oft-used metaphor for god's truth). Haunts vanish in the sunlight, so are they human souls? Sometimes they seem to take on the likeness of the deceased, so that would make sense. But why, then, are they so often malevolent? Are they sinners returned from Profundum to plague the living?

Whatever the case be about the immortality of the soul, none would hope to become what we call haunts. Perhaps humans can become demons, or maybe a ghost is just a demon's way of granting false hope to us. What is certain is that haunts are usually found in places of cold and fear and death, and show precious little humanity.

Most cultures share a belief that only one who is killed in some inappropriate manner can create a haunt. Either a sinful murder, or an assassination, or most commonly, a noble of the line of Eld who was slain after admitting defeat.
