Jexel (or "The Panther") is a catfolk artificer living in the city of Nostellian. He took on a parental role to Omari Roseand his sister, Zola, after the death of their parents.
He is the only catfolk living in the city, and potentially in the region.
Appearance
Jexel stands around 6'0" tall with a bulky but compact frame. His fur is black and sleek, with a bit of greying around the muzzle, the only thing betraying any hint to his age. He dresses simply, and his clothes are often stained with mechanical grease or other magical substances.
He has a small notch cut into his right ear.
Personality
Jexel is often cold and aloof to outsiders, but is fiercely protective of those he loves – even if the one hurting them is themselves. He doesn't seem to have a very good grasp of the softer side of his emotions, leading him to express his love in a brusque, impersonal manner.
While he is quick to anger, Jexel does seem to feel a great degree of regret when his words or actions hurt someone else.
Background
Early Life
Very little is known about Jexel's life prior to his arrival in Nostellian. He has stated that he arrived in Illhad'or by boat, but he claims he doesn't remember where the ship sailed from.
Career
Jexel quickly took to the study of engineering and made a living for himself creating unique artifacts for Nostellian's bottomside population. He became particularly popular among members of the criminal underworld hoping to acquire access to magical resources without drawing suspicion. He notes that this has caused him grief in the past, having been subject to many acts of violence in his early career.
While often involved with multiple of Nostellian's gangs, Jexel's unique position eventually afforded him enough respect that he no longer needed to fear consequences for his affiliations.
The Scarlet Scars
Jexel is implied to have had some close dealings with the Scars before Constantin's takeover. While his relationship with the gang's previous leader is not a topic he discusses, it is implied it may have been more positive than Jexel's current relationship with Constantin, who he feels is dangerous and keenly manipulative. When warning Omari about the Scars, he stated that Constantin was the sort of person who wouldn't hesitate to kill to be on top.
While he continues to do commission work for the gang, he has an unfavorable view of the organization, particularly due to Constantin's treatment of Omari and Zola.
Family
Jexel claims to have no family of his own, or at least none that he can remember.
After the death of Omari and Zola's parents, Jexel began offering assistance to the siblings in hopes that they wouldn't feel compelled to put themselves at risk in order to survive. He was quickly impressed by the children's intellects, taking them on as his protégés. While always close with Zola, who shared his interest in engineering and a similar sense of humor, he often clashed with Omari's aggression and ambition.
Their relationship would worsen when Omari joined the Scarlet Scars against Jexel's wishes, and again when Constantin would eventually kidnap Zola and flee back to Calanthi, but the two maintain a connection and a positive relationship in the current day despite its strain.
After learning of Eon's pregnancy, Jexel seems eager to play a role in the life of Omari's child as well, motivated not only by his love for Omari but also by his drive to keep the child from harm.
