The TLDR about skills:

Skills are calculated using the Controller (usually an attribute or another skill that sets the baseline for how good you are at it), the Point Mod (the amount of xp you put into it, and it's not one-for-one), its Difficulty (which is doubled if you haven't spent any xp on it) and any Other Modifiers (such as bonuses and penalties from templates). When choosing your skills, try this:

  1. Put 1xp into the skill and see where that gets you. 
  2. Look at your Numbers tab, and look at Column D to see what the controller is.  If it's a skill, we recommend spending at least one point on that too. 
  3. Always spend 1, 2, 4, or 8xp on your skills at character creation.  That's when the increases happen. 
  4. Some skills (including magic, academic fields, knowledge, and musical instruments) are specialized, which means that by default, they only do "one thing."  If you want them to do more, take the feature "Extra Specialty."

Self Control, Keep Calm, or Bravery?

Here are the definitions of each of these three skills: 

  • Keep Calm - Staying rational despite intense emotions, excluding fear.
  • Self Control - Mastering yourself against your instincts or impulses.
  • Bravery - Facing your fears or acting despite them.

Whenever your character is trying to reign themselves in, one of these skills will probably come into play.  Which of the skills you use depends on which force within themselves they are trying to control.  If it's fear, go with Bravery.  That part is simple.  When it's not fear, try to figure out whether it's emotion or whether it's instinct/impulses.  It might not always be clear-cut, but try your best! 


Using social skills against other PCs

We want rolls to matter, but we also don't want rolls to make someone have their character do something that they feel they wouldn't!  The following rules will help keep rolls with social skills fair for both sides. 

Intimidation

First, ask the other player if your character has done something that the target character could find intimidating.  Please be generous with agreeing to this!  If they say yes, then roll, and there is no opposing roll.  They may also opt to give you a +1 bonus to this roll if fear is already there. If you succeed, they respond however they see fit, and you gain Leverage on them.  If you succeed by 5 or more, they also must choose one: 1) I do something for you, 2) I offer something I think you want, 3) I get frightened or shaken and run away.

Flirting

First, ask the other player if your character has done something that the target character could find attractive. Please be generous with agreeing to this!  If they say yes, then roll, and there is no opposing roll.  They may also opt to give you a +1 bonus to this roll if attraction is already there. If you succeed, they respond however they see fit, and you gain Leverage on them.  If you succeed by 5 or more, they also must choose one: 1) I give myself to you, 2) I promise something you want, 3) I get embarrassed or flustered and act awkward.

Persuasion 

Roll unopposed when you are trying to convince a character of something.  If you fail, you give them Leverage.  If you succeed, they respond however they see fit, and you gain Leverage on them, which you can spend immediately toward whatever you're trying to persuade them about.  If you succeed by 5 or more, then they must also choose one: 1) They agree. 2) They agree, but ask something of you in return. 3) You get +1 to a social skill roll of your choice before the end of the scene.
