Construction of the Great edifice began in 1302 and would be finished 30 years later. At first it was to be in Honor of St. Patrick but in 1312 the events that lead to the canonization of Brigid occurred. Thus by the time it was finished they had long decided to dedicate it to her. And shortly after the Statue of her was made the centerpiece of the great plaza in front of the church.
